Re: What is the truth on the Octane

Before who say all gas is the same jump in here, I have noticed a difference in how responsive my cars are when I run Shell 93. I will have to try Sunoco 94. I was traveling in Eastern Europe last summer and they have Shell 97. Crazy.

Re: What is the truth on the Octane

Spoke with a Mehanic it's the same engine as everythign else. If it doesn't knock 87 is fine. But he also said if it does it's CHEAPER to buy the fuel additive yourself. I've been using 87 and have not noticed a change it performance. He also said remember too. That Premium has more additives (junk) because most of the gas consuming world buys regular and the tanks empty out sooner before sediment builds up. he goes not the same for premium. It sits and sits and sits. and the sediment drops in there like mud he goes looks the same beeing pumped but not the same in your engine. It's like water sitting to long builds gunk

Re: What is the truth on the Octane

The 1GR-FE engine in our FJC's has a 10:1 compression ratio, hence it will always generate more power with the recommended 91-Octane than with lower Octane ratings. But, they also a have knock-sensing ignition computer that will automatically retard the ignition timing to avoid the predetonation you would otherwise get with running lower Octane gas at 10:1 compression. Because of this, there is no harm in running lower Octane gas, but it will generate a little less torque and hp with retarded ignition and lower Octane. Higher Octane gas does absolutely nothing for your engine UNLESS you have a high enough compession ratio to take advantage of it.

Re: What is the truth on the Octane

I run 89 octane & everything is all good. As long as you keep the type of gas you run consistant, you can run any grade you wish. You may sacrifice a lil performance but being that our vehicles ar enot race cars, who gives a **** in my opinion. I did the same in my 04 v8 Touareg & no problems there either.

Welcome kiki72mcom,

With all due respect to your mechanic, I don't think he's been in a store for a while to buy octane booster or an additive like Techron. Around here it costs 20 cents more per gallon to go from regular (85 RUL) to premium(91 PUL). For a 15 gallon fillup in the FJ, that's $3.00 per tank. PUL has more cleaning additives like Techron (not "junk"). All fuel dispensers have filters. Years ago you could see them on the outside of the dispensers, now they are on the inside of the dispenser for safety reasons. Sediment drops out of gasoline when it sits, not "drops in there like mud". Your mechanic may be a good friend, and a good mechanic, and I respect that. But he is feeding you a bunch of bunk (even if he really believes it).

That being said, as others have already said, 87 octane is fine.

Re: What is the truth on the Octane

And how often do they change the filters is the big question ? Not like at the oil change where you can ask them for you old filter back. I got a change earlier than recommended and the one time I didn't ask to have my filter back. They didn't change it.

Re: What is the truth on the Octane

I'm guessing just before the yearly inspection.. LOL.. Ron

PS: All fuel tanks collect crap. Never buy gas when the truck is filling the tanks, pumps are slow and/or smell bad.. Just move on to a different point.
