Re: My K&N conclusion

has anybody removed the charcoal filter? I saw a thread sometime last year about it. I put the KN drop in filter a while back , but I didn't take the "second" filter out. Anybody done it yet?

Re: My K&N conclusion

I took the charcoal filter out. No noticeable difference for me.

Re: My K&N conclusion

Just thought that I would share a little more info. My second tank of all city driving netted me 19.8 MPG! Definitely going in the right direction. Of course, my variables changed a little again. I added Mobil's 0W-30 to the engine halfway through this experiment. Not sure if that had any direct influence on my mileage. I'll find out on the next fill.

Re: My K&N conclusion

I use the K&N drop in for daily driving then I buy a $10 paper filter right before a multi-day trail run. Not sure if my logic is logical. I just feel the cheap stuff prevents less dust in the engine. If the K&N really gives any type of performance gain, I would rather have that on the street.

Re: My K&N conclusion

i had a k&n in my previous car, a VW Jetta with a V-6.... I know other guys have mentioned it before, but you have to keep up the cleanings.... I found it really hard to tell my filter was dirty by visual inspection, so I didn't clean it... needless to say, the car had some issues... poor gas mileage, restricted flow, which in turn turned to dirty flow, which burned up 2 oxygen sensors and my catalytic converter... if it looks clean, it might be, but i'd clean it every oil change... for me after my previous experience, it's not worth it, especially in the dusty environments... paper filters for me for a while at least until i forget my k&n issues

Re: My K&N conclusion

I put in the AMSOIL replacement filter last week...very tight fit into housing so not expecting any dust to get buy it on sides....and filter media is very good so time will tell but always had good luck with them before so expect same again.

it is dry filter and good for 100,000 miles or 4 years..whichever comes first.

Re: My K&N conclusion

I finally filled up again. The mileage came out to 19.46 MPG. I would conclude that all of the mods that I mentioned in this thread have helped my mileage. I still haven't had a chance to do all highway driving yet. Hopefully somewhere down the road I will be able to check that out as well. Anyway, hope all of you have enjoyed this thread!

Re: My K&N conclusion

Be careful when cleaning and reoiling a K&N use just enough oil to wet the filter. over oiling the filter can lead to a build up on the mass air flow sensor = a decrease in fuel milage and a host of other driveability issues.
