They are all the same, it's a box with a cone filter in it. It just depends what you want the top aluminum cover to have stamped on it. AFE, Volant, TRD.
also the AFE has a hole that you can unplug in the front for who knows what reason, the intake side of it is actually bigger than the throttle body so It's not like you will be getting anymore air into the engine anyway. I guess if you wanted a Luke warm air intake you could unplug it. lol

Re: best CAI

I have the Airaid, Im OK with it but think I should have spent the extra for the TRD. For me its a sound thing, I would like a bit more sound from my CAI. Any recommendations?

Best thing about the Airaid is the CARB# and sticker.

Re: best CAI

TRD was one of my very first mods. I'm really happy with it. I noticed a little extra pep and better throttle response, but the best part is the sound. Paired with some headers and exhaust it sounds great. They aren't all the same as some have a box and others have an open air dam. I think the box is better for keeping hot air out and it also may sound better because the box acts as a sound resonator.... maybe. I think TRD and AFE are the same thing. If you don't want to deal with oiling the filter, you can replace it with a dry type that doesn't need oil.

I havn't seen the open ones, interesting. do they use the hood as the top seal? I'm partial to the box, I have it all silicone sealed and attached to my snorkle so it is truly waterproof. I can kill the engine by covering my snorkle inlet.

Not unless they changed it recently.

Re: best CAI

The FJC already has a "cold air intake", located in the passenger fender well. The questions is do you want to spend $350-400 for a box with an upgraded, high flow filter or drop in a K&N and install a snorkel to get CAI that has some value (as an off-road accessory)...

Re: best CAI

I have only used the Volant CAI on my Dodge Cummins....not done anything to the FJ like that yet but they just updated. There are some differences between them though in my opinion. Some of the AFE and others call themselves CAI but are really warm air as they leave cone filter exposed with three or four heat shields to keep direct heat away.

The Volant, is the best of them all if you want a solid design...sealed box....great filter media with high flow. For that matter the oem setup is also a CAI just a different configuration. If someone had an aftermarket tube that goes from fenderwell to filter box that had fewer angles in it......and then dropped in a high flow filter for oem setup like AMSOIL or K&N.....I think you would get the same result as spending $500 on one of the others. You might come damn close with just the airfilter difference alone....
CAI has sealed box with air intake outside of engine compartment....and that is what we get from factory.
Just something to ponder.
