ramsee, to keep water out, check out UNI airfilters material and bel-ray oil. i use this stuff for my atvs. it kept water out of my snorkeled rubi500, after it was submerged 100% for at least 15 minutes while i was crossing a pond. ---my box wasnt water tight...there was an maybe half an inch but no water in my oil...its all good.
It sounds as though you are saying that the filterbox that is not waterproof was submereged completely for 15 minutes and it kept out water.

How exactly did your engine get air to run if it was completely submereged in water??? Or was the inch you are talking about referrring to how much water was in the intake box?

Re: Snorkel gave me an idea...

haha! it is to laugh. Ok next time I'll get an engineer to make fancy schmancy cad drawings for you guys.

I think the water resistant air filter is just for indirect water (rain, etc). I'd hate to see an airbox full of water. ouch.

Thumbs up Re: Snorkel gave me an idea...

You know I like your idea of a shorter snorkel intake. The fact is: The snorkel does give you cooler air which makes better horsepower and most likely better fuel economy.

So, not everyone wants to have a giant black snorkel (myself included). I'd consider a shorter ram air intake like the larger snorkel style for the pure fact that it is a great mod that produces real results!

Never stop thinking. I'd like to see if anything ever gets developed.

Re: Snorkel gave me an idea...

Thanks! I appreciate everyone's input on this. I'm definitely moving on this one way or another. I asked Gadget to weigh in about the TRD CAI, but I haven't heard back. I'm torn between making the "short snorkel" or adding another port to the TRD CAI's air box and running some sort of air scoop. As I said earlier, a mod without piping through the body would be much more desirable to people. But then again I'm doing this for myself.

It's not just a matter of not wanting a giant black snorkel. Cold intake temps are one aspect of a cold air intake, but it completely ignores the other aspect - pressure drop. While it make be that the pressure drop through a snorkel is negligible, no one has mentioned that yet and I'm curious. As a general rule, more piping and bends result in higher pressure drops.

A 1 psi drop through an intake is a 6.8% drop in air mass at sea level. A 20F increase in temperature is (assuming an 85F ambient) a 3.7% drop in air mass. The pressure is very important.

the snorkel had a good 12-15 inches above water, but the quad was completely submerged. water came in thru the gap between the homemade snorkel and the box as it wasnt completely watertight. my brother just told me, it was more than an inch, the foam filter was touching the puddle of water.

Re: Snorkel gave me an idea...

Agreed. I don't think I said in as many words, but the snorkel is pretty darn long and there are a ton of bends in it. And I suspect it's in an area of low resistance, which is why most one lower down next to the hood should be good.

Very interesting tidbit of info there. I had no clue about pressure drop. I'm thinking the ARB and the Volant Snorkels get plenty of ram effect at speed.
