Manual Transmission has two fill plugs???

About to change Man Trans oil (for the first time). I noticed two fill plugs on diagram in repair manual - one on top and one on side of unit. Why? Do they fill the same cavity? I assume the plug on the side of the unit (driver's side of car) is the hole through which I add the new fluid? Appreciate any info/enlightenment on this before I drain the oil.

Don't know; good question.

Yes.

You can add it through either but use the one on the side to get / check the correct oil level. Fill it until gear lube starts to run out of the bottom of the side hole, with the truck sitting level.

Re: Manual Transmission has two fill plugs???

Quick question, I just replaced all the fluids in my 6-speed and I was unaware of the two fill plugs. I filled the transmission though the fill hole on the driver side. Is this parallel to the other fill hole on the other side? Also, does the fill plug not have a washer, I didn't see one on mine.

Re: Manual Transmission has two fill plugs???

I checked under the rig this morning and I could not find the second fill plug on the transmission. Can someone point me into the right direction? Thanks.

Re: Manual Transmission has two fill plugs???

I've not looked, but it sounds like the second plug is on top of the transmission. I wouldn't worry about it much for normal servicing.

Is the top hole the breather location?

Re: Manual Transmission has two fill plugs???

What fluid did you put in your MT? Thinking about doing this also, but the shop I went to last time to get the engine oil changed told me it takes "special toyota" fluid. What's so special about it besides the price?

Snacks, per my PM to you, attached to this post is a PDF file of several pages from the factory service manual that shows the manual tranny and where the fill plugs are. Both of them use a gasket (washer). If you didn't find one it probably stuck to the tranny case when you took the plug out. Look on pages MT-16 and MT-22.

The auto tranny takes Toyota Type WS ATF, a synthetic fluid that currently only Toyota sells. Your manual tranny will take any good-quality gear lube.

Redline MT-90 is good. It's API-GL4 75W-90 rated, which fulfills the Toyota requirements.

From the Redline website:
Quote:
Popular in Nissan, Toyota and Mazda manual transmissions and transaxles as well as other selected applications, this is a 75W90 GL-4 Gear Oil that’s slightly heavier than MTL. Provides excellent protection of gears and synchronizers and its balanced slipperiness provides a perfect coefficient of friction, allowing easier shifting.
