Catalyst converter warranty repair

I took the truck to the dealer for 30k maintenance (just a bit over 30k) then drove about 20 miles and the check engine light and the whole column of yellow lights came on (VSC off light.. and others), the truck drives normal, ScanGauge read P0430, and since it just left the dealer the day before I sent the truck back to have them look at it.

They said the cat converter needs to be replaced, and it's covered by warranty. I was a bit puzzled that it happened.. I dont have any engine related mod and dont think I've done anything that would made it fail.

Does anyone have their cat converter replaced because it failed? Am I just really lucky to have a bad one?

Re: Catalyst converter warranty repair

Highly unusual for only 30K miles. Could be as simple as a bad O2 sensor as well. I assume they checked that out first (cheaper repair).

Re: Catalyst converter warranty repair

Did they clean the fuel injectors? I brought my FJ in to a dealer in SoCal when my transmission went out. They recommended their "Run Right" service which included the fuel injector cleaning. Since I live in Mexico and buy most of my gas here, I figured it couldn't hurt since they don't use any detergents or cleaning agents in the gas here. Within 70 miles of leaving the dealer I had a Christmas tree on my dash. Brought it back to them and they told me it was P0430 but they would have to diagnose it further to make sure it wasn't an O2 sensor. They said it wasn't due to the fuel injector cleaning. I brought it to the dealer in Tucson and they replaced the cat free under warranty and said the treatment the CA dealer did probably caused the cat to fail.
