As best I can tell from their website, the 'black box' modifies the signal from the IAT (Intake Air Temp) Sensor or the ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) Sensor, depending on application. That can be dangerous without it taking into account any of the other information that the myriad of sensors are providing to the ECM real time.

I wrote the manufacturer, asking tough questions about what the product really entailed and why it wasn't just a POS resistor blackbox like so many other product on e-bay, etc., that just fool the engine re temperature and cause more problems than solutions. Here is the response:
"As you may have noticed, there are a few other sellers on eBay who also have a similar item under the same title. Our item is exactly the same as theirs. The idea of using a series of resistors to alter the temperature signal has been around for some time now. If they do not work, it would be evident that they would not still be up for sale. Just by looking over our feedback, anyone can see that these do intact [sic] work, although they are not for every vehicle. We have noticed on some makes where this item has not worked. These vehicles get removed to prevent future problems. The quote that is found in the picture is from an actual customer. We made sure we had his permission before adding it to the photo. We get comments like his from time to time which is nice. We will be working on getting more added to our listing so that other [sic] can see what people are saying about our item. But back to our item. It would be great if this works for you especially when you have others who would buy as well.
In you [sic] email, you mentioned that our gain was high, but we feel that's 20% increase is a out right [sic]. So I bought this chip about 3 months ago and just ran across your thread. I gave this thing a chance thinking I could always get my money back if it was a joke. I am not sure who you talked to when you contacted the company but I did the same thing as you. I sent some questions to really see if it was legit and then I figured I would give it a try.
Much to my surprise I have had about a 15% increase in my MPG. So that was good enough for me to keep it and I figure I have already paid for the item and now I am just saving more at the pump. As for performance I am not so sure about their claims.
i installed this chip today, there is no specific instruction, the cd that comes with this has expired password and username.
after contacting 48 hrs ago no contact back
finally figure it out on my own with help of manual that is on this forum,
will post back on the mpgs and performance after testing to see if this is scam or for real
