Mobil 1 or Mobil 1 Extended Performance Toyota 10K 0W-20
I'll bundle all my oil questions into one:
1. I always change my own oil at 5K interval with Mobil 1. I recently moved from Florida to Seattle, Wa and at the Walmart up here (I hate Walmart, but boy is the oil cheap!) has Mobil 1 5W-30 5qt for $25 and Mobil 1 5W-30 Extended Performance for $26. Is the extra $1 worth it? I think so...just looking for thoughts (I run a Extended Performance filter also BTW). And what is the deal with Mobil 1 5W-30 SUV? It also is $25.
2. Has anybody seen this? Toyota Is Raising Service Intervals to 10k miles - Bob Is The Oil Guy
Basically the 2010 FJ (there is a picture of the service bulletin) and all 2010 Toyota's are getting 0W-20 synthetic. Is the different engine that much different to run a different viscocity oil? Or should I be thinking of going to a 0W-20 synthetic?
Thoughts?

Re: Mobil 1 or Mobil 1 Extended Performance Toyota 10K 0W-20
There are endless heated debates over at PriusChat on the topic of extended oil change intervals. As some of you may know, the 2010 Prius requires synthetic 0W-20, and new Prius owners are getting ticked off at +$50 oil changes every 5,000 miles
Note: at the moment, there is NO CONFIRMATION from Toyota itself regarding 10,000 mile oil changes using synthetic. So until it comes straight from the horses mouth, the official oil change policy remains 5,000 miles or 6 months
Regarding Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 Extended Performance, or Mobil 1 Truck and SUV, I personally would pick Mobil 1 European Car Formula 0W-40. The EU Car Formula covers far more specs, and is intended for longer oil change intervals.
YMMV. I personally would consider the 0W-20 if operated in continuous Arctic conditions, and if changed frequently. Otherwise, it offered no benefit to me, except for a valvetrain that went ticktickticktickticktick.
Comparing Mobil 1 0W-40, to Mobil 1 0W-20, and the dealership 5W-20: no difference in fuel economy
Hope this helps

Re: Mobil 1 or Mobil 1 Extended Performance Toyota 10K 0W-20
I've had very good results with Mobil 1 0W-40. I would think that those who have superchargers should consider a somewhat beefier oil
I'm currently running the made in Germany Castrol Syntec 0W-30, as this oil is far easier for me to find locally. The Syntec 0W-30 is very well respected, but I don't have an oil analysis yet, so can't comment on how well it works in an FJ motor
The Syntec 0W-30 is considered a "thick" xW-30 oil, but still meets the factory requirements for 5W-30. Perhaps Toyota might raise a stink if you had an unrelated motor problem while running 0W-40, but I don't see how they could question the use of 0W-30.

From what I understand, the only difference with the 2010 1GR-FE engine is the addition of VVT-1 for the exhaust valves (the previous engines had it on the intake side only), and new ECM tuning to take advantage of the better controls. Adding VVT to the exhaust side helps the 1GR-FE meet newer emissions standards by controlling NOX emissions without the use of a seperate EGR valve. I don't know for sure but I'm fairy confident the machined parts are made to the same specs as the previous years. It would be too expensive to do that for something as simple as an oil spec change and it isn't needed. The 1GR-FE engine is a proven engine.

Re: Mobil 1 or Mobil 1 Extended Performance Toyota 10K 0W-20
The Extended Performance meets the ACEA A5 specs for extended oil changes, but is not considered a heavy duty oil for severe service.
The Truck and SUV is also rated ACEA A5 for extended oil changes, and Mobil claims it has extra additives for severe service. However, this would be reflected in an ACEA A3/B3 rating, which the oil does not have
I suppose for the same money, I'd chose the T&S over the regular Mobil 1 5W-30. If the EP is $1 more, nothing wrong with that either
