CAI for dusty driving

We have a 2007 FJ that I would like to do some minor performance modifications on. 4WD 5A locking diff. and A-Trac. We have a mile long dirt road to get to our house, and often take the back road dirt road tour just to get home. Can be up to 15 miles in the dust.
It is often very dry in the Texas Panhandle and I am not sold on the K&N oiled filter thing. Do not like the very open filter set up on top of the oiled filter issue.
What would you guys do in a dust bowl? We are not going Hard core 4 wheeling, just want a little more Hp. Will be adding a cat back and maybe headers.

Re: CAI for dusty driving

I have the TRD CAI and switch to the AFE ProDry S filter which is an oil free air filter.
AFE part number is 21-90044.

Very easy to clean, just soak it in a mild soap/water solution. Rinse it and let dry.

Re: CAI for dusty driving

Forget the aftermarket CAI and install an OE Cyclone Pre-Filter used on the '08 & up FJ's and swap out the stock filter for an Amsoil or similar quality drop-in unit.

Re: CAI for dusty driving

the cyclone is a good idea too but I still love my cleanable filter, I just pop it out and use the K&N recharge kit. pretty much after every run, also clean your maf sensor.

Re: CAI for dusty driving

The cyclone pre-filter ROCKS!!! It, too, is removable and cleanable and you would be disgustingly surprised how much fine dust and dirt that thing prevents getting to your airfilter!

Re: CAI for dusty driving

Anything not requiring oil, would be best for dusty trails, so you can just remove the filter and just wash with water. Not having to worry about recharging the filter with oil, or in case you run out of the oil. Pre-filters are a good bet too. Usually in sand and never had to worry about it so far, I run an AEM Dry flow filter.

Re: CAI for dusty driving

I have a dust cover that came with my aFe CAI. It works very well. After a run, take it off and brush (I keep an old 2" paint brush in my FJ) the sand/dirt/mosquitoes/butterflies/tadpoles out of the box. It only takes about 3 minutes to pull the lid and install and only about 5 minutes to take it back off and clean up.

Re: CAI for dusty driving

The best protection you can get for dusty conditions is a snorkel with a pre-filter. Without a doubt. I don't know why everyone thinks they are just for deep water. The air is much cleaner at roof level than it is at the stock intake level. Way cleaner. Add a pre-filter, my favorite is the one from Extreme Limits Offroad, and you are golden.

Re: CAI for dusty driving

Thanks for the info everyone. Was not sure who was making a good dry performance filter and that is what I was leaning towards. Damn sure want the pre-cleaner filter also. We use them at work and they are worth the money.

Re: CAI for dusty driving

PF2057P is the Injen/Amsoil CAI, while EAA238 is the Nanofiber drop-in filter.
