honestly you learn by doing....
or by watching others who have more experience...
so you can post up in the texas section to see if anyone wants to go camping and then get out there...
also depending on the type of trips you want to do...1 night vs mulitday you might want to check out expeditionportal.com lots of folks there go on longer trips.
The best bit of advice I can give is buy quality so it only hurts once...buying cheap over and over sux

Def. try to get together with others and learn while you have a good time. Buy as good of stuff as your wallet allows and take good care of it. Learn as much about the place your going to prior so there will be no surprises and have fun! That is what camping is all about.

Another thing I thought of was, bring books to read or board games in case mother nature pulls a nasty on ya.

Re: Maybe a noob like me can learn something about camping in here

I don't like to go in the woods unarmed. I prefer a large caliber revolver. I just don't trust a semi-auto not to jam when an 800lb grizzly is charging. Even with a gun, chances are you are toast, but at least you have some chance. I also like to carry bear mace. If you get hurt a gun can be of great help for signaling rescue. Also you can shoot a moose or some large animal, gut it, and crawl inside the body for warmth. It smells pretty bad but it works. Plus if you end up hopelessly stranded with no chance for survival, it is easier to take a bullet to the dome than to die of dehydration. Sorry to be so grim, but going into the woods is intrinsically dangerous. Better prepared for the worst than to be sorry. I also strongly recommend a personal locator beacon of some sort. They have very inexpensive units available now that can pinpoint your location via GPS and alert rescue crews. These are especially important to carry if you spend a lot of time in the woods alone. One of these little units could save you from the possibility of needing to kill yourself in the first place! A small water purifier or iodine tablets are really important too.

I echo what Lance says about buying cheap. I can't help it, I'm programmed to look for the best deal...and sometimes on the rare occasion you can get away with it depending on the item. But when it comes to the big stuff, the important stuff, just shell out the cash and be done with it. Tents, backpacks, stoves, fridge, sleeping bags.

You will clear your mind, and your wallet!
