Thumbs up Locater Device?

What is your opinion of this? I'm just a weekend warrior so far but this looks like a good investment for the hardcore explorers.

I see commercials for this while watching Survivorman I love that show!

With the SPOT Satellite Messenger, you and your loved ones have peace of mind knowing help is always within reach. SPOT is the only device of its kind, using the GPS satellite network to acquire its coordinates, and then sending its location – with a link to Google Maps™ – and a pre-programmed message via a commercial satellite network. And unlike Personal Locator Beacons, SPOT does more than just call for help. Tracking your progress, checking in with loved ones, and non-emergency assistance are also available, all at the push of a button. And because it uses 100% satellite technology, SPOT works around the world – even where cell phones don't.

Re: Locater Device?

Looks like a high tech set up that is pretty cool.
Part of my getting out is the fact that I cut my ties with the outside world, so I am not too interested in this tech--having said this, I do have a family and remember talking to my daughter on a sat phone once after being on a whitewater trip "off the grid" for 6 days. That was nice.
I enjoy self reliance and the fact that no one can bail me out occasionally.
This would be great if you were in high risk areas a lot and wanted to reassure your family. Another side would be if you lost the unit in a crevice or on a class 5 river, it would be stationary. Your family would assume the worst and send in a recovery crew. Hopefully my spouse would not spend the insurance money before I got back.

Re: Locater Device?

I think there are a few (short) discussion thread somewhere..

we have not been to any remote places since we got it, but it's been pretty interesting "playing" with it on my way to and from work, and I think when we do get out in the middle of nowhere it'll be cool to let friends and family know we are okay.

I especially liked that it worked inside the driver side storage compartment.. good little place to hide an orange device!

Re: Locater Device?

We have one and love it! It's worth the money and cheaper than most of those other devices out there....emergency contact/non-emergency contact/and tracking...can't beat it!

Re: Locater Device?

search my username and you will see another review...
I love mine but my wife loves it more...she can see that me & my sons are safe and sound and I don't have to be on the cell phone (if there is service)....
best of all for the price of a couple of lunches a month I can have a bunch of my friends come rescue me in the desert instead of hiking out and getting a hefty tow charge.
worth every penny and something I would recommend to someone even if they only go out a few times a year. What is your life worth?

Re: Locater Device?

Looks like I am outnumbered here. Yes, bad things happen to good people but do you always want a safety net in life? Being prepared is important, but always having a bail out is an illusion. You are safer wheeling in the desert than driving down the highway. One sleeping drunk driver can end things in a flash. 2 cells splitting abnormally can end things in a few months.
This may make you feel better, but I will bet it has actually made a difference as far as lives saved in a handful at most.
I temper my feelings about this in that I have a 9 year to raise. Nevertheless, I want to teach her self reliance and this is just too much dependance for the outside world to rush and save me. Why should they do that?
My 2cents and worth what you paid. Obviousily my voice is a minority here--just trying to provide another view point.

Re: Locater Device?

I like what I'm reading here. Good to know it's not a gimmick or an over priced tool for only the rich and famous. The FJC will eventually take me and my family to new territory. I would like this peace of mind.
