I prefer a H&K USP, but they can be quite pricey. I would stay away from Berreta, and Taraus but then again its only my opinion.
amen, only pistols in the household are H&K, yes pricey but you cannot beat that german engineering. H&K 9mm P7M8
H&K .45 USP Compact
oh and btw, i've been wanting to say this since i got the fj and saw some gun placements in fjs.
i think the straight up windshield with the large dash would be the perfect place to mount a break stock shotgun, like my remington 870 (has a breakstock on now, old pic). would this interefere with any airbags or anything you think? it seems like the perfect place

that location seems like asking for a break in to me. if it were mine, i would want any firearm to be out of sight.

well i was thinking for more along the lines of camping and such, but where is another place to mount it inside the fj?

In reading this thread I'm not really sure of the op's target (i.e. defense, people, animal, camping, emergency, etc..), but I'll add my two cents anyhow. I've shot lots of guns over the years and probably my all-time all-around favorite, if I could only have one, is a S&W 686 with target sights and grips, combat trigger and 6" barrel. It's very easy to use, accurate as can be, stainless steel, shoots 38's or 357's, rat/snake shot, hollow point's or ball. I've shot 500 rounds or more in a single outing/match and not even been tired. Old school certainly, but if I could only take one that would be my choice. For a long gun, in my part of the country, it would be an 870 express or 30-30 carbine.. Ron

the 686 is a great pistol. i have a model 15 that i absolutely love. it was a model chosen for many agencies during its hay day.
cant go wrong with a revolver. if i lived with someone (used to.... long story) i would choose a revolver because of the ease of use. its mindless. in a panic you can forget to deactivate the safety, forget to chamber a round, malfunctions with follow up shots, etc... but you cant ever forget to squeeze the trigger, which is all thats necessary to make a DA revolver go boom.
also, a revolver requires much less maintenance. if you arent a gun person, a revolver will perform much better when not cared for as well as it should be.
