Packs.

i'm looking at upgrading my pack. what i have right now is really an oversized daypack eddie bauer backpack. i know i definitly want a frame pack. any suggestions? i was looking at the Alice LC-1 Large pack
its the standard mil issue pack. i know there are better and more expensive options, but i want opinions on jsut how much better and why? is the cost difference of somthing like The North Face Crestone 75, justifiable?

for reference i can find the mil issue pack for approx $80 with the crestone comming in at $200 anyone have experience with the mil pack?

Comfort and weight. It's all about those two things.

Re: Packs.

Load both up with sandbags and see how they fit. Go with the one that fits the best. A tiny pinch at the the trailhead means a bruise that encircles your body when you get back.

Re: Packs.

REI has great bags, but if you want something a little more mil speck, checkout Black Hawk products or Kelty, can't go wrong with either. I do a lot of climbing and I have both an LL Bean and an REI for regular rock climbing / day trips.

i like mil stuff because generally its well thought out and inexpensive, but i'm not adverse to better options. its jsut i have a hard time parting with what little money i have, so i need convincing that an REI bag or similar is worth it relative to the cost of a mil bag.

Re: Packs.

I just picked up a Cabellas XPG 5000. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet... It's got all the stuff you'd expect from a ~200 dollar pack. It's similar to the comparable Kelty model. About 6 lbs, straps adjustable in many ways, padded/raised back, water bladder, etc.

Wish I could say more!

Re: Packs.

If you go outdoors to enjoy, a well design pack will make that much more enjoyable. If you are thinking of bushwacking external frame packs will be difficult to navigate compare to the internal frame packs. Mountain Smith has some nice packs that are pretty good price point for what they are designed for.

Re: Packs.

If you can, go to a shop that sells packs. Try them on, adjust everything to make it fit your body. Everone has a different body type/shape, get the pack that fits you.
