New set of Terra Grapplers

I sprung for a new set of Terra Grapplers today - replacing the stock Dunlop Dueler HT 840's. Much has been posted about each - I'll try not to repeat.

I hated the Duelers in snow, (never felt all that secure in the wet either) so my primary purpose was picking these up before things get interesting in Chicagoland.

The Grapplers are slightly more noisy, a tad stiffer in ride, steering feels a bit lighter, and there's less sidewall roll when cornering.

The looks of the tire is a side benefit. I'll follow up with snow impressions after we start to get some flaky stuff on the ground here, but I'm looking forward to more traction than the Dunlops were providing.

Thanks to everyone that posted information about so many sets of tires that allowed me - as well as others - make a knowledgeable decision when replacing the rubber.

Thanks!

I've been going back-forth in the past months trying to decide between another set of 265's or 285's, currently have 265-75-16 on my kmc enduro's, but they're a tad smaller than stock. I just put a set of 5100's on the front, set @ 1.5" of lift to level the truck it, which it is now... Which brings me to tires, I'm leaning toward Yokahama Geolander, and just last night discovered the *275-70* size. I know a lot of people are running 285, but they're 15 pounds + heavier per tire, and I drive a lot of highway, and don't want to suffer any worse mpg.

I know a lot of you guys stuff the 285's on w/lifted front, but I'd rather not and really interested in seeing if anyone has used this size. Pics would be great!:rocker:

Best summer, winter tires--no off-road use

In summer, I want a tire that has low rolling resistance, is quiet, and is good in the rain. In winter, I need a separate set of tires that excel in handling the difficult snow + ice conditions we get in Canada. I do not need off-road capability for my tires since I do not go off-road

What summer and winter tires do YOU recommend?

I've asked this before, but here goes again:

I'VE BEEN RUNNING 285/70-R17'S For a while now and am happy with them for my purposes. I also can't seem to find a non-alloy tire to fit them. Last summer, when aired don to ~15psi or a hair less for traction, I ended up seeing, again, firsthand, the difference between aluminum and steel alloys. The Procomp aluminum alloys I had on jst got destroyed around the outer bead, as if every rock had a gouge it was waiting to inflict.

If this is the price of the ticket for this ride, fine. But If I am missing something, or if here's a way to keep wheels safe while abusing rubber, please speak p.

Thanks.

Sorry in advance for my wheel and tire newbness... Been doing much searching but can't seem to find info from owners that have gone from 17" wheels to 16". I have a 2007 FJ with stock 17" alloys. I want to go to 16" with a 255/85/16 tire. I will be getting lift and tires at the same time, I am confused about what size wheel will fit my FJ and this tire. All web sites seem to say 17" is the only wheel. Dealership I go to the service guy didn't know that it can come with a 16" wheel and he didn't think it would fit my 07. From what I read I understand only certain 16" wheels will fit, but where can I find said wheels. i dont want anything fancy. Would be happy with simple set of steelies. Any help on this would be much appreciated.

I have a 2007 all Black TRD. Next week I will be installing a 3" lift (3" front, 2" rear). I'm trying to determine what size of tires to get. I don't want to do a bunch of modifications. Please note it is my daily driver.

The current (OEM) tires are BF Goodrich TA 265/75/R16

Should I get:

285/75/R16 (is this big enough that with the new lift the truck will look good)
295/75/R16
315/75/R16 (this might be too big for my daily driver use?)

Thanks for your opinions.

You that have 3" lifts, what size tires do you run, that look good?

Some Gorilla Lugs and Locks Questions

I am getting new wheels and plan on getting black Gorilla lugs and locks. Gorilla's website is overwhelming. I searched through the forums and had a couple of questions.

In addition to the key for the locks, is a special wrench required? I read in one thread that a Gorilla wrench was required.

Are getting all special locks in place of lugs overkill? A guy at 4Wheel parts recommended I just get all locks.

What's the main difference between the Acorn and Acorn bulge? In general, are these interchangable? The wheel manufacturer said that I need a lug with a 60 degree conical. Both the acorns at Gorilla's website have 60 degree conicals.

Should I get a smaller hex? I assume that the smaller the hex, the easier I can fit the wrench without scratching up the wheels.

TT TRD Wheel leaking....

I've had to add air every 2-3 months to my left front tire since my FJ TT was new. I finally took it to a tire store today and, VOILA...there's a tiny pinhole inside the wheel where one of the spokes enters the outer rim. Sooo, I take it to my Toyota dealer and the assigned service goober can't find the leak. The service writer called me over & I explained exactly where the leak is and the goob' immediately spouts out, "how hard did you hit something to break the wheel"? I then asked him if he had any clue how absurd that remark was, and how hard would I have to hit something to "knock a pinhole" in a wheel. Well I went into the service area and instantly found the leak for them. To his credit the service goober did man-up & apologize for his earlier snafu. I left there at 5 PM today, Tuesday and they said the wheel would be here by noon Thursday.
