MIRROR LIGHTS: Turn signal conversion

To read the original full thread and post questions/comments, please go to Converting the mirror lights to turn signal lights (basic overview w/ pics)

Did you ever want to convert your white mirror lights to amber turn signal lights? I did! So here are some basic details.

Note 1: I currently have another post going for heated mirror installation and both of these projects are running concurrently. I am going to do a brief thread here on the signal lights only.

Note 2: Pretty involved project by itself. You would need to want these pretty bad to do it by itself. But what the heck, doing a little project like this is kinda fun.

Step 1:
might as well start with the signal taps. you will need to tap a pink line for a right hand signal and tap a blue w/ white stripe line for the left signal. the taps will need to be "after" the signal relay up under the drivers side dash.

Step 2:
make your t-splices as mentioned above
Note: I'm sure there are other locations to make your taps, this location seemed convenient to me.

Step 3:
take your door panel off, remove the kick panel and door sill molding
Note: make sure the window is in the "up" postion (learned the hard way)

Step 4:
remove the speaker (this is to allow access for a few of the following steps)

Step 5:
remove the access cover to the mirror

Step 6:
remove the mirror (3 screws and a little plastic clippy thing) Note: this is the area where you will apreciate having the window up in step #3 (CRAP!)

Step 7:
remove the plug/metal bracket on the mounting surface of the mirror

Step 8:
pull off the rubber gasket on the mirror base to expose "path" to mirror body.
Note: set the mirror down, we are done with that for a while

Step 9:
remove the door wire harness bracket from the door (this will allow access to the wire "tube" that runs from the door into the cabin

Step 10:
fish a positive line and a negative line for the light thru the wire "tube" into the cab. I used yellow for positive and black for negative. Note: You may see the additional wires I ran for the heaters also, they are red and black

Step 11:
reinstall the door wire harness bracket and tidy up the wires leading into the mirror access hole. Note: on a project like this, don't be a cheap a$$. allow more than ample wire on both ends to reach your destination with extra wire to trim off.

Step 12:
run the wires through the door and out the mirror hole. Note: be very carefull how you route the wires in the door. make sure they route out of harms way of the window

Step 13:
fish the wires into/through the mirror (see also step #8) and remount the mirror. Note: this is a step where you will need an extra set of hands to hold the mirror and remount it. thank goodness my wife got home at the exact moment I was doing this and my left arm was giving out (what are the odds?)

Step 14:
cut the 2 wires on the mirror light and connect 1 of them to the new "power" "yellow" line and connect the other cut line to the ground "black" line.
I appolgize - did not get a picture here, but pretty straight forward

Step 15:
put everything back together and throw away any left over "extras" (i.e. hide the evidence)

Step 16:
run the new power (yellow) and ground (black) over to the taps made in step #2. Plug in the "yellow" lines to the "pink" and "blue/white" taps. connect the black lines to ground.
(sorry no pic again)

Step 17:
repeate steps #1 - #16 for the "other" side

Step 35:
have a beer and pat yourself on the back ..... job is done.
caught a pic right as the amber bulb was in the "signal on" postion

I am sure most of you will say "heck of a lotta work for turn signals?" ...
I say "personalize!"

Very nice. Did you investigate using the existing wires that are already powering the lights so that you wouldn't have to run your own?

I may as well ask before someone else does... what bulbs did you use?

I had run new wires for the light since I was running new wires for the heaters and I had not investigated using the existing wires. I think that would certainly be an option because the wires for the light have to originate inside the cab!

Here is a closer look at the main door harness after it comes into the cab.
This is what is behind the passenger side kick panel. It's hard to see in the
pic, but I bet you will find the light wires in there.

The mirror lights use a yellow wire with a brown stripe and little silver specs.
I did not experiment, but you may be able to tap it here and save the effort of going into the door.

The light bulbs I got were just standard low wattage "168" wedge bulbs I picked up. Unfortunatly I threw away the package already with the exact part number on it. They are nothing special, any auto parts store will sell them.
