I put the PT297-35061 OEM aux light assy on yesterday; VERY easy install, clean and got a good deal from
Genuine Toyota Parts and Accessories wholesale to the public. I thought that I would add a little mod I did and additional info for the instructions.
GENERAL notes:
I believe that the wire harness is available seperate under part numbers PT-35070-AS for the switch to the junction block and PT297-35070-LH for the wires to the lights. These are not confirmed so double check before ordering.
The wiring AND the lights are from Hella. If someone has a contact there maybe the wiring can be purchased direct to save some $$.
I did NOT buy the PT297-35062 $80 support bracket. I'll make one for $80 if I really need to. If I do I'll add that info here. I probably will since I need a flag mount for the dunes.
SWITCH LOCATION:
I did not tear the console apart and so I installed the switch to the left of the steering column. This was a much easier install. The vent and cover to the left comes off easily with a good tug; no screws at all! I reached in and popped out the switch blank.
WIRING:
The t-taps go on the green wire and the green-white wire just as the instructions state but I tied into the light dimmer - rheostat. The hard part was getting a hand in to squeeze the connector on the back of the dimmer. After this was out I pulled back the tape on the wires and clipped on the t-taps.
The 13 pin connector (step 2h) was real tough to get into the junction block. Aside from needing to be a contortionist to get to it the other wires were in the way and I needed 4 hands. This was when I had to have my first beer break! I coiled the extra wire up and wire tied it into the corner of the dash.
UNDER HOOD
The under hood part was a breeze. The connector was just outside the firewall on the driver's side fender - not real clear in the instructions.
Make sure that the fuse goes into the 3rd slot from the end. I got mine in the 2nd and it does not work at all from there!! The top of picture in the instructions is the driver's side of the vehicle.
I took out the grill AND the plastic radiator support. That way I could wire tie to the existing wiring easier.
LIGHT MOUNT
Since I did not buy the OEM mount for the lights I just drilled a hole in the front most hole for the light mount. I did this from underneath so that I would make sure and drill in the center of the hole. Once I had the holes in the right place and the wiring where it needed to be I mounted the lights - a mistake!! The grill needs to go on FIRST and then the lights. There's not enough room between the lights and the grill to mount it once the lights are on the bumper. So, I took the lights off and THEN put the grill on and THEN put the lights back on.
I need to aim them and then drive a little to see if there is vibration. If so then I add the support and extra brackets.
Sorry only a few pics. It was busy today and dark now. I'll try and post some pics in the next week.
