SPLICING SYNTHETIC WINCH LINE: Inst. w/ pics

To read the original full thread and post questions/comments on this topic, please go to Splicing a Synthetic Line

This is for those times that a splice is needed for a synthetic line. The first is my prefered method for making a loop and the second is a easy way to join two sections (even though a loop is shown the same method is used to join the 2 ends).
Assuming you have a 12 strand, you need to cut 4-6 strands to taper the end and electrical tape is used to taper the line to a point.

In the first picture the end of a pen is used . . . . or even a stick can be used.

These previous pictures show how to prepare the rope for splicing. The next step is to thread the pen about 2'-0" from the end into the centre of the rope
and thread it up the center section.

I prefer to whip finish the eye section to lock the 2 sections of rope together.
Other methods are stitching the length of the splice with a loop stitch. However, if the second method is used, it would be best to slip some shrink tubing over the splice to tighten the outer rope on to the inner.

Here in the second type of splice (Called a "locking splice.") Less rope is used, and the tapered end is passed thru the center of the rope 4 times to "lock" it, and then about 12" is spliced thru the centre of the outer rope.
Hope that makes sense.
