Arrow May 2,3 & 4 - Ocala NF mapping and exploration run

OK, this was the soonest I could guarantee my own time availability, so others are welcome to jump in or recommend another date. Hopefully a months notice will be enough for everyone who would like to go.

The main goal of this run will be to GPS map the new ONF 4x4 trails, provide pics and write-ups for others to see what we found, and start making recommendations for the "off-trail obstacles" that could be built. Oh, and to have fun too of course! I have been told by many that the ONF trails are extremely simple, but I want to document this for the SE Forum members anyway.

For latest plans, tril times, directions and other stuff, please see post #45:

I may be up for that. Big Scrub isn't so much a campground as it is an open field with some fire rings. I'm not sure about Lake Dorr. You may want to see if Buck Lake is open. That's a pretty nice spot.

I have heard good things about Juniper Springs too, but haven't camped at any of them myself so I'm open to suggestions.

Re: May 2,3 & 4 - Ocala NF mapping and exploration run

I've been wanting to explore ONF too.

Just as a heads up, I have heard warnings from some ATV buddies saying to watch out for "The Rainbow People" or "Rainbow Family" Rainbow Family - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. They're basically modern day hippies living in ONF that are said to include runaways who will steal anything not locked up.

Even an ONF ranger warned me of them over the phone when I called for primitive camping info last year. I was told you can primitive camp anywhere you like in ONF during non-hunting seasons - it doesn't have to be a designated site at all. She further advised me to set up any primitive camp well away from any Rainbow camp and well off a forest road, so neither my camp nor vehicle is visible to somone passing by on the road.

I'm definatley down for the first weekend in May as there's saftey in numbers. And FYI, in ONF firearms aren't allowed on the forest service roads, only on state & county roads. However, bear mace, a 3D maglite or baseball bat should do the trick for self defense. Ocala National Forest, a Florida State Park near 32620, 32670, 32671, 32672, 32691

My CCW license allows me to carry a "concealed deadly weapon" yet the regulations disallow firearms. Plenty of other options left!

Sounds good to me. I know the schedule is open for work now so hopefully it will stay that way.

Re: May 2,3 & 4 - Ocala NF mapping and exploration run

Damn!! I just submitted a leave request last week to Fly up to Tennessee to see my aging folks! I will see if I can add another 3 days to my leave and work it out. I'm not gonna miss out riding with my Buddies to ONF! There seems to be many trails to ride but I recall nothing challenging, just some loose sand here and there. There has to be some kind of wicked terrain hiding somewhere in this vast area! Then again I would like to work with Skorp and help Plan and construct some new trail area's with the guidance of the Park Rangers. The camping at Juniper Springs campground is awesome. Until you tubed that river your just missing out!

Re: May 2,3 & 4 - Ocala NF mapping and exploration run

Add me to the "Possible" list. I think I'll be out of money after April for any new climbing trips for another couple months. I'll know for sure towards the end of the month.
