Question Withlacoochee State Forest Trails Question?

Ok. I was on google earth to check out the Withlacoochee State Forest and I saw a lot of trails there. I'll like to know which trails are the most popular ones? and Which trails you run most of the time?

Thank You!

There are a bunch of guys hitting the Citrus trails there this weekend. I think PaulthePhotographer or meathead may be the most familiar with them.

Re: Withlacoochee State Forest Trails Question?

You might want to keep the question on this thread and not hijack the camping thread. Just ask Dragon to move this thread to the NEW Florida forum.

First off "Withlacoochee State Forest" is quite a few different and discrete areas.

Which one are you inquiring about? Citrus, Richloam and Croom being the ones FJCs go to every once in a while, in that order.

Let's say Citrus. I think is the most popular; Am I right?. Which one is your favorite?

Thanks Paul!

I would defer to Jerry, who is very knowledgeable about the WMAs.

Try Trails 15, 18 and 9. Also Trail 11 south of HWY 480, by Stage Coach Pond Cemetery. Trails 10 and 13 are the main E/W and N/S trails.

Citrus is a lot more fun if you go with one more other FJCs. There are a few mudholes that are notorious. And deep washouts do happen from time to time.

But mostly Citrus is pretty easy.

There will be a great group of people up there this Saturday 9-12-08, if you can make it to the campout ride.

If not, post up a thread in the NEW FLORIDA section about when you would like to go and somebody might be able to make it also.

Re: Withlacoochee State Forest Trails Question?

This is the common route that we use to start out. I didn't come up with it, but my name was mentioned, so now I feel obligated to document it. OK, actually, I'm just bored and don't feel like working:

Coming from Stage Coach Trail, I turn onto trail 13. There is a sign there for Tillis Hill campground. Alternately, you can go in on trail 11B just down the street accross from the cemetery. Once on 13 or 11B, go north about half a mile or so and turn left on trail 22. 22 gets slightly off camber in a couple of spots, but there is nothing challenging.

When you get to trail 15 and have to turn right there is a nice little washout for you to drive through. Head up 15 and notice the nice mud holes that are now closed off. Get slightly miffed, but don't let it ruin your day. Continue on trail 15 until you get to 16 (a couplefew miles) and then turn left. There is a washout on the left side of trail 16 that is pretty cool. I like to pause here to clean the regurgitated kibble from my center console. Keep going down 16 and there is another washout with a slight decline. After you go through that notice the mudhole to the right of the trail. This is not a bypass. It may not look like much depending on how much the rain has filled it in, but that sucker will swallow you whole.

Turn around and head back out 16 the way you came in. You can do the same washouts from the other direction. Once you get to trail 15, turn left and head North again. Trail 15 has a little jog to the right and then back to the left. The jog is actually on trail 14, so don't turn left back up 15 instead go forward on 14 to find a somewhat larger washout in that trail. At this point, I would run through that washout and then grab a cold tea and a snack while Paul or Chris goes through that washout at every possible angle in forward and reverse.

Once everyone is done taking pictures and joking about Paul ripping plastic parts off, keep going down 14 to 13 and turn left. Head up 13 to trail 6 and turn right. Take trail 6 to trail 11 and there is a washout right there after you turn.

That will kill a little bit of time. After that, just drive around a little looking for stuff. All of those directions are on trail and prescribe good, legal behavior. I'll leave all the other spots for the reprobates to tell you about

Re: Withlacoochee State Forest Trails Question?

Now I am going to sit and ponder who Meathead thinks is a reprobate?

rep·ro·bate (rpr-bt)
n.
1. A morally unprincipled person.
2. One who is predestined to damnation.
adj.
1. Morally unprincipled; shameless.
2. Rejected by God and without hope of salvation.
tr.v. rep·ro·bat·ed, rep·ro·bat·ing, rep·ro·bates
1. To disapprove of; condemn.
2. To abandon to eternal damnation. Used of God.
