Exclamation Tech Write-ups and living posts

Here's my idea, but really it is not my idea at all.

I would like to see a little change here. (Dragon sighs, FJoel is stirring the pot again!)

I recently asked for some info in the 4x4 section: Synthetic winch line questions (and hopefully answers)

I was given a link to: 4X4 Winch Lines at Winchline.com: Winch Line,Winch Ropes, Recovery Gear, Tow Rope, Synthetic Winch Line

From there I found this link: Installing A New Synthetic Winchline - YotaTech Forums

This was written by Corey, one of our members here. He is a great guy and I have already learned a lot from him. Atleast he hasn't told me to stop sending him PM's yet!

I would like to see a new section, with two sub forums.

Tech Write-ups:

1. Technical Articles
2. Living posts (I think this is Terahex' idea, and a great one!)

Things like some of our stickys, could be put up in a living post fashion in that section, and we could all put our input in and build a great reference, as Corey has done in the above link. Once we get a good solid, garage mechanic friendly article put together, we file it in the Technical articles section and lock it up (closed thread). This keeps it free of clutter. If we need to make an update, a mod will have to do it. Your update would need to be suggested in the living post thread of the technical article.

So what do you think? Please let's expand on this, and I'd really like to get it going. I know I will greatly benefit from this, and it will keep some of the newbie posts down, having an ultimate tech article for whatever we can. My post on synthetic line will soon just become forum clutter, and this will greatly reduce that. As usual, PM's can always be sent to get clarification, and we can provide submitting party info in the locked Technical article for this purpose, submitting party consent of course obtained.

Git 'er done! (Please)

Joel

Re: Tech Write-ups and living posts

So the way this would work is the thread like say a headlight bulb comparison... would be started as a thread and info would be compiled. After everyone puts their $0.02 in, problems, solutions, thoughts and ideas, someone sorts through everything and organizes it, then the thread gets closed and put in a Tech section?

If so then after a while we have a Tech section that has info and write-ups on any mod you want to do, complete with instructions, pics, problems and solutions, and different options! Straight foreward info without the questions and high-jacks in the middle!!! I like it!!!!

I third!!

This would be great! It really wastes time going thru all the additional posts and hijacks to find the information you want. Should make searches much easier too.
I hope the Mods are willing to do the extra work.

Re: Tech Write-ups and living posts

Joel, here is another way to prevent people from injecting posts into someone's article.

I have a "Check out my truck" section on YotaTech.
Check Out My Truck - YotaTech Forums

I set the permissions up so a member can start a thread in there, but no one else can reply, only the threads original author can reply to his own thread like when he has updates.

The admin(s) here can easily setup a forum that way, then have child sections under it like I do here.
Tech Write-Ups (No Member Posting) More Articles In The Wiki - YotaTech Forums
No one can post in the above tech section but me though, I use my other login and put the articles up, but it is a lot of work.

But in my example of the "check out my truck" section, I think that would work great for here with the different categories setup kind of like YT's tech Article section.

Am I making any sense

You are making a lot of sense, Corey. I'd would love to see this put in place!

Of course we do have the build-ups section and it is kinda nice to bounce ideas off each other in those threads and let people like Air2Air know how many keyboards have been wrecked due to drool... it is something to consider. I'd like to start the tech articles yesterday:

Dual battery install (sbechtold and cruiserlarry)
Diff breathers (Shadow-warrior)
OME install (forgot the author...sorry)
Synth line (Corey)
Complete comparisons

Lots lots more! One stop mod your FJ shop!
