I'm just typing out loud here, but it seems that the most asked question from a "newb" or seasoned forum goer is "will these tires (or rims) fit?"
Try doing a search for tires, and with the amount of options/combinations out there, you'd possibly be reading for days if you ever found someone with an answer to the exact same question. If you do search you will come up with 1000 replies of "try the search function".
It seems like the obvious place to look for answers to this question would be here,
Wheels and Tires - Toyota FJ Cruiser Forum stickied right at the very top.
But it's not there. (It may have been moved to the tech articles (I haven't looked

) regardless of where this type of info might be, it isn't intuitive to find, even for a weekend warrior forum dude like myself, much less a "newb".
What if the threads are duplicated in both locations does that take up too much space? (I bet it would still be less space than all the "will this tire combo work?" threads that will undoubtedly pop up over the next how many years?)
It'd be cool to see in that stickied location:
A comprehensive thread detailing back spacing/wheel spacers (with some basic hot-dog-like illustrations)
An often updated table showing what forum members have claimed works.
(I know there have been a couple of attempts to gather this information, but member cooperation always seem to fizzle out and no one maintains stewardship over maintaining the thread.)
It would be cool to see it broken down by wheel diameter/width then tire brands and then sizes/models with columns for: no rub, rubs, body mount chop(yes/no), Fenders (stock, removed, bushwackers)
Suspension/lift. Wheel make up (forged, alloy, steel) DOT approved, back spacing, diameter, Spacers.
The thread should be informational only. Questions, banter and off-topic replies would be reported and deleted.
It would be cool if we could take the "photos of every wheel and tire combo" thread and integrate that as well so each tire wheel combo in the table could hyperlink you to a reply below with somewhat standardized photo requirements (at least one shot from straight on (tires with wheels only on flat ground so people can get a more even feel for how much wheel well they fill up etc)
Will this curb the good ol' tire combo questions? Of course not, but anyone responding to those questions will know exactly where to send the O.P. for comprehensive information. And the thread can be reported and a timeline for deletion set-up.
I seriously wonder how many totally useless threads are out there. Not the ones that have some little nugget hidden 243 posts down that should have had it's own thread,
Like old for sale threads (oldest one looks like it was posted April 3, 2008 and no activity on it since April 4, 2008.
07 FJ tranfer case for sale Is it still for sale? No one knows, but it doesn't read sold anywhere, but the O.P. hasn't bumped the sale either...
(side note: a weekly bump is fine, but the twice daily bumps seem a little much, if you are that desperate to sell, lower your price, right?)
People may argue that they want to see old for sale threads so as to better gauge fair market prices, blah, blah, blah. Since the economy is so stable all the time I'm not sure how valuable the comparison could be, but for the sake of argument could we not have a "dead sale thread" Where the expired threads go to rest. (expired from O.P. reporting items all sold, inactivity for X amount of time, etc... This would force sellers to be more attentive to the threads they've authored, and if they can't give it that kind of attention then don't waste our time right?
