Bicycle Rack Hitch Mount

Anybody here use a hitch mounted bicycle rack? If so, whats the make/model and how much room ya got?
Im looking at the Thule series, and just curious whether I need an extender due to the spare tire.

Re: Bicycle Rack Hitch Mount

I have the hitch mount Thule Docking Station with 2-bike rack and it clears the spare just fine. The Station also has a cargo basket I use to haul dirty or bulky stuff I want out of the cabin.
Good luck.

I use a Yakima KingPin--clears the spare just fine. I think the Yakima and the Thule are the most commononly used hitch-mounted racks.

I found the best price at www.backcountry.com

Re: Bicycle Rack Hitch Mount

I went with the Saris which also clears just fine. Picked up the two bike extender so when I need to haul four bikes I have the option.

Re: Bicycle Rack Hitch Mount

Only hitch rack I would reccomend for the FJ would be the one made by Softride, less expensive than Yakima/ Thule and much much better construction, this thing is built to last and carry multiple bikes.
It easily clears the spare, opens down to load bikes, doesnt require it to be removed to open the tailgate, and does not RATTLE like the other racks do.

Re: Bicycle Rack Hitch Mount

With so many of the new bikes not having a top tube, I prefer the racks that go wheels in rather than attach to the frame. In and out in just a few minutes with no chance of rubbing (between bikes). I went with the Saris as I wanted something completely bomb-proof; heavy duty construction - no movement.

The disadvantage, compared to the Thule, is that it doesn't pivot down so you can not open the door - have to use the back window.

Pros and cons with everything

Hey Blackstone, which of the 3 Softride bike racks do you have?

I have the base model Softride Access Pull Pin Rack, it holds 4-6 bikes.

Re: Bicycle Rack Hitch Mount

I use a Bauer swing away rack (with +2 bike extension / 4 total). Works well with adult mountain and tour bike frame sizes. A little bit of a challenge with smaller frame sizes (BMX). Swings to the right so cargo door can open without removing bikes. Locking mechanism. Available online (Everything SUV shown below) or at any local "sport rack" shop.
