FJ as a family vehicle?

I really like the look and specs of the FJ and I am seriously considering it for my next vehicle. Do any of you use it as a daily driver/ kid hauler? I only have one child so room not an issue but how is getting in/out of the back, access to the rear door for an 8 year old, and things like that. I have not even taken one on a test drive yet as I have a sketchy dealer in town and will purchase through a FCU buying service when the time comes.
I also enjoy surf fishing on the outer banks-you can still drive on the beach there as well as getting out in the woods and swamps of eastern NC which is why I like the specs of FJ. I have been searching for a good old FJ40 or Land Rover to restore but they are either nasket cases or much too expensive so this might be great as a all in one vehicle.

I am not expecting big numbers but what are finding is your average city mileage?

Last question (for now) any rumors of new colors being offered any time soon. I like vodoo blue the best but I think I would like a forest green even more. Sorry if these ?s have been asked before-this is my first post so I am still getting used to the site.

Re: FJ as a family vehicle?

I use it as a daily driver. Have no children. Avg. city mpg. 16. I have a little extra weight due to modifications, about 250 lbs. Welcome to the forum....

Re: FJ as a family vehicle?

I use it as a daily driver and my commute to work is 30 miles one way - combo highway/street. I get on average 20.5 mpg. As far as a kid hauler, it has plenty of room in the back for 3 adults, so that's not an issue. plus the nice thing about it is that you can't get out of the back unless you open up the front doors.

Re: FJ as a family vehicle?

Welcome...i have put two adults and an 8 year old in the back seat with no problem. The back seat is roomier than you think, but the view is not as kid friendly with the smaller size and higher postioning of the windows in the rear doors. I'm getting around 16-17 on my 12 mile commute to work through downtown Atlanta and I'm running a pretty dressed down rig. The rock sliders I have add about 65-70 lbs.

Re: FJ as a family vehicle?

I use mine as a daily driver. I take three kids to school each day (10,9 and 7) and they have no trouble getting in and out of the back seat. I also took a 500 mile trip this weekend and with five of us in it, there were no complaints. I have a 6MT and get about 16-17 mpg on each tank with a mix of stop and go and short highway times.

Re: FJ as a family vehicle?

Mine is a daily driver too, I have an 8 year old girl and 4 year old boy who actually ask to take the FJ over my wife's minivan when we go out as a family. I took months of research and looked at and drove everything in this category (H3, Heep Strangler, Yttera, Glubaru, etc) I mean everyting. All roads lead back to the FJ and Toyota's quality, reliabilty, performance and fun factor! Buy the FJ you won't regret it!

Re: FJ as a family vehicle?

It's impractical as a "drop off/pick up vehicle."

Instead of someone being able to hop in the back by opening a single door, the front seat passenger needs to unfasten his seatbelt, open the front door, THEN unlatch the back door.

Doing that several times a day (this will be a family car) is pretty damn annoying.

absolutely

I get 19 - 21 mpg around town in stop and go traffic with the AC on most of the time. We have an automatic.

My boys are 14, 12 and 8. I would not want to be one of 3 adults in the backseat. It isn't made for 5 adults.

We still have our Taurus (wife's daily driver) and Dodge Ram Quad Cab (weekend vehicle) but I love my daily driver FJ.
