well, when i go camping its usually far enough into the unexplored wilds of north america (i just said that to sound cool) that i cant (nor would i want to) just hop in the truck and go hit the mickey D's when we get hungry. plus i like to stay out for a few days at a time.
so theres the cooler with the food; coleman stove OR tripod and grate for cooking over the fire; jugs of water; jugs of extra fuel; sleeping bags for me, the wife, and the kid; wheeling specific gear (hi-lift, snatch strap, axe, shovel etc); ruck with spare clothes for the duration; etc. you get the picture. i would be perfectly happy with a change of socks, a couple MREs and some water, but thats just me. the family is a little more high-maintenance.

Yeah, I have a girl who was a lifelong girlscout. When we go camping it looks like we are building a Marriott by the time we have camp setup. The dinner selection is always to die for...
We take a group from work a couple of times a year and we are the ones that pack the extra essentials for the half-wit buddies of mine that always forget either their sleeping bag, tent, stove, food whatever... we are also the group that takes the food since if we left it up to them we'd starve trying to figure out how to microwave a burrito with no microwave.
It's always a good time though.

LOL. Wow, some great responses to my post - especially Roosterdo's Soccer Mom vs FJC Hooters rally. I gotta say I never thought my Runner would be viewed as soccer mom material - usually I get nothing but compliments from guys who like a purpose-built, no nonsense ride. It never even occurred to me that others would've already posted about sleeping space, so I'll have to check out previous posts. As far as gear, I keep most of it on top and keep the air matress and sleeping bag ready to go in the back - wheel all day and then just pull over and catch some zzz's, no tent to carry or pitch in the dark and break down. Especially works well when the only place to stay is the Manson Family Ranch
I think some of you took my post as a criticism of the FJ, but not at all. I'm a Toyota loyalist and just trying to figure out if I'll prefer it over my Runner.

My girl is a pampered princess, ex-model, whiny...umm angel. She says she likes the outdoors, but she brings hairdryers and inflatable mattresses, has to have a campsite with HOT showers and FLUSHING toilets, bla bla bla. The list goes on and I think you get my point. So sleeping in the truck has definitely gotta be considered. Otherwise we aint going camping. I know what I described isnt REAL camping, but otherwise I'd be going camping alone.
So camp alone - with the cruiser forums group. Solves both issues. Plus, if ya bring her just once and my girl is there, she'll get a lesson on camping that makes it painless for both of ya.
What the hell do you need a hair dryer for on a camping trip? Flushing toilet - this aint howard johnsons...
This is the woods. Bring food. The rest is negotiable.

You know what, who the hell cares what Real camping is? For me its about being out there, doing what ever works for you. Dirt and 4 wheels with power and good traction work for me. Personally, I don't see the attraction of sharing the hard ground with God's other creatures while trying to get a good nights sleep, or having to pitch a tent and then breaking camp every day to do it. But like I said, what ever works.
I still dig the FJC, and will no doubt have one in my garage soon, but it's not likely to match my Runner for utility and function.
