Trailer Hitch Dumb Questions

So um..I have to tow a U-Haul this coming weekend to and from Michigan. I have a trailer hitch on my FJ but what else do I need? Are the ball hitches different sizes? I just have no experience in this area.....

Re: Trailer Hitch Dumb Questions

You need to ask U-haul what size ball the trailer you're renting requires. Then you'll need to buy that ball size. It'll probably be 2".

My hitch came with a keypin lock. You may want to by a actual key lock if you play to leave the trailer unattended for any length of time.

That's pretty much all you need. Just a ball, and a key lock for the hitch if necessary. U-Haul should provide the light adapter -- they did for me.

Re: Trailer Hitch Dumb Questions

You need to ask the U-Haul supplier about ball size and wiring connection. You have a 4 pin wire. Also, ask the supplier whether or not the trailer has brakes, either electric (which means you need more than 4 wire) or inertia (which means compression pressure on the trailer hitch applies the brakes). Make sure the trailer comes with a spare tire and physically inspect the trailer for lights, tire pressure, lockability, etc. before leaving the lot.

Re: Trailer Hitch Dumb Questions

You have the receiver Boston. The hitch and ball are easily obtainable.
As has already been mentioned, find out about the ball (1 7/8", 2", etc)
The hitch can be straight out or a drop-down. You have a 4 pin, there are adapters available to mate other configurations to the 4 pin.
Brakes are the most important concern.

Re: Trailer Hitch Dumb Questions

You sure you did not get the other part. Mine was in a box.

Any way like the others said you can get that in any shop.

If I were you I would just get it a u-haul. That way you get the right size ball

Good luck
