Its a simple factory designation... Toyota designated gasoline engines with F and diesel engines with H... They use numerical designations as well, FJ-40 and so on. J of course stands for the generic term "Jeep".

Read this, kind of explains it all...

Re: Fj

F--k Jeep?

Seriously, I heard it was the J model with the F engine. Too lazy to google up what the J stood for, if anything.

I also heard that the actual reason we don't have a diesel version is that, in focus groups, no one would agree to buying a BJ Cruiser.

Re: What does FJ stand for?

The FJ in FJ Cruiser doesn't really mean much other than being symbolic of the original FJ series.
It doesn't have an inline F engine and it is not a Land Cruiser.

Toyota Cruiser designation is usually listed by:
Engine:body type:series

For instance, the FJ40
F - for the 1F, or 2F series engines
J - body type, Land Cruiser
40 - 40 series models

93-97 Land Cruisers are the FZJ80.
FZ - for the 1FZ-FE engines
J - body type, Land Cruiser
80 - 80 series models.

98-07 Land Cruisers are the UZJ100
UZ - for the 2UZ-FE engines
J - body type, Land Cruiser
100 - 100 series models.

Though, the FJ Cruisers designation is kind of weird.
It is the GSJ15.
Not sure what the reference to the S is as the engine is a 1GR-FE.

2001 UZJ-100 Land Cruiser - 35" MTRs, ARBs fr/rr, 4.88s, ARB front, BIOR rear & skids, Radflo 2.5s, OME springs, 1" BL, WKOR rails, DT headers

The FJ is built off a version of the Prado chasis, which in Australia the Prado is considered a Land Crusier.
