Why the dogging on GM?

I am confused why all this dogging on GM products is happening, they make quality cars, and have been a major part of the United States economy for nearly a hundred years now. I am not against toyota one bit, and am planning on purchasing the new fj but only because I am an enthusiast. The Fj cruiser is the only car that toyota makes for the enthusiast. Besides toyota fj's the only cars that I own are gm, and my business only operates with gm products. I dont think you guys see the big picture, with GM sucking air right now to continue operating and unsupportive people talking GM down all the time like many of you, a company that supports more than you could imagine inlcuding thousands of jobs in the United States could go belly up. All I am saying is I am sick of the trash talk of hummers and what not, to be quite frank I am not sure why your talking trash about the hummers when they have continually recieved higher offroad ratings, which I assume is why many are purchasing the FJ now, including myself, and so I can park it next to my 78 fj.

It's all about reliability my friend. I was loyal to GM for many years (my Dad too) and I thought the maintenance I was doing was "normal", and yes it was normal for GM prodcuts. My brother started driving hondas and after a few years I discovered what a reliable vehicle really means. I bought a 95 honda accord and If I told you what I spent on it after 200,000 miles over 8 years you would call me a liar. Then I sold it to a guy for $3800.

I have a company Gm truck and I have spent thousands of dollars on brakes, air conditioning system, fuel tanks, sending units, transmissions and the list goes on.

Just buy a consumers report magazine, the special vehicle issue and see for yourself. The bottom line for me is I will never, ever, buy another vehicle unless it is a honda or toyota.

The fact of the matter is that GM makes junk! When they file for bankruptcy, the only ones who'll take a hit is the little guy. "Management" or lack of, will still draw the big salaries after restructuring. A few might be let go but they will get a healthy severance package. The line worker will get the bum's rush. It's management's fault that their product has gone south, not the hourly worker. They make close to 39 different models of which only 2 or 3 get a "Favorable" review in Consumer Reports.

GM makes a reliable product. YOU have got to be on something. Have you ever read Consumer Reports ? GM , Ford, and Chrysler products are garbage. Chrysler wouldn't be here if the government didn't step in to help them back in the 80's . GM is closing down some plants and so is Ford. Ford got so upset about the business they have lost, that Ford doesn't want employees parking non-Ford vehicles on Ford premises.

Re: Why the dogging on GM?

I have never owned a GM product and I am not a mechanic. I have driven and Envoy and Yukon pretty extensively and I did not like either of them. They just weren't comfortable to me.

As to GM mgmt, they are laying off a lot of people in my town but they seem to be handling it very well. They are paying for people to go to school for - like three years.

Re: Why the dogging on GM?

I have owned and driven several GM vehicles in 3 countries now (Holden in Australia, Vauxhall/Opel in Europe and GM in North America) as well as several Japanese vehicles.......the Japanese products are far superior and reliable.

Re: Why the dogging on GM?

Dude, my employer has a pick up truck fleet of about 80 vehicles. Chevy 2500's, Dodge 2500's, Ford F150-250's, and some Toyota compact trucks. I am friends with our in-house mechanics. They BOTH drive Japanese cars. They tell me the Toyotas only need the PM (planned maintenance) work performed and practically never need repairs. The domestics are constantly on the lifts for fuel pumps, brakes, shimmies, water pumps, stumbling (4-5 hour job to change spark plugs on the 2001 Ford F150's!!!), and transmissions. Just a direct observation guys!

Re: Why the dogging on GM?

Even amongst the Japanese car industry, Toyota has always made an excellent productt. I remember back in the day when Mazda brought out the rotary RX-3s and 4s, the "tuners" back then were getting Toyota Celica 5 speed boxes and putting them in to handle the increased power.

Re: Why the dogging on GM?

89-94 was GM's peak. They were getting kind of better with the good fuel injection technology of the day and the imports were not as far superior in all regards, although there are outstanding models from any given product line you can point to.

you don't hear about " my 98 chevy truck went 280,000 miles on the original motor like someones 93 might have, and the interior of my old 92 camaro held up really well for about 10 years (when my friend sold it- probably still at least in fair condition).

GM used to put money into cars, but I think they are so chincy now because the union labor to build it puts them about $2000 further into the hole than most other makes who build in this country. Maybe if they go bankrupt, then they can start over by breaking all the union contracts and getting some plants in the south or in foreign countries.

Re: Why the dogging on GM?

Here in Canada, 20 years ago, a company call LADA start selling unreliable vehicle. Even if there car are half the price of competition, the company stop selling car in Canada.

My point is, GM will face their decision to cut on quality and it's not the fault of people who relate what GM is in reality. In fact, we help GM by telling what they need to change to save GM Company.
