Re: Spare tire cover

Actually, it improves the time life due to sun exposure. Have you noticed RVs sitting for long periods usually cover all their tires? Same reason...

Re: Spare tire cover

UV light breaks down rubber. covered is better but collects ****. just take it off once a while and wash it.

Re: Spare tire cover

When I bought my FJ, the 4 BFG tires had all been worn down to nothing but the spare tire had never seen a day on the road! Obviously poor rite rotating on the previous owner's part. But the thing is, even though it still had full tread, because it had always been exposed because of no tire cover, it had tons of cracks and had just taken a beating from the elements, so basically even though it appeared new, it was crap now. But I upgraded to my awesome Fierce Attitudes now and I'm rotating all 5 now so hopefully, weathering on the tires is greatly going to be reduced.

Re: Spare tire cover

A lot of people don't have them because A. they went to a bigger tire and they don't fit, or B. their FJ didn't come with it and C. some think they are ugly. Just some reasons for you. I have bigger tires and it won't fit.

Re: Spare tire cover

If you like it, keep it on. Rotate the tires regularly (including the spare), and all will be well.

When I had stock tires, I occassionally pulled it off just to get the leaves and junk out. For the early FJs, there is a split on the bottom that expands to get the cover on and off, and it also allows water out.

Also, I usually run my stock rims in the winter with studded snow tires, and usually have the cover on the spare without any problem.

Another good reason to lose it is if you do a 5 tire rotation, none of the tires will get any more weather beaten than the rest. I have a cover with camera cutout if anyone needs it!

Apparently they make a good base for an off road dog bed! Even a little pee hole.

Re: Spare tire cover

"Spare tire cover = civilian", was what I was told. When I took mine off after 3 1/2 years my spare still smelled new.

Plus,

When combined with a tow strap they make excellent sleds

LOL, Gonzo the redneck neighbor getting face shots on his spare cover. I hope it didn't have the camera cutout or I bet you get a snow enema rooster tail
