I drove my mom to pick her van up at the Toyota dealership she takes her car to. While waiting I had a salesman ask if my FJ was the four or six cylinder.

Seriously, though... Most salesman have no common sense.

Exactly. I'm slowly transitioning into finance myself. Thank god. You are exactly right about what is paid on new cars. Almost every new car, unless we hold money on the trade (which is .02% of the time) is a $100 flat. The unfortunate part is that most customers take salespeople for granted. Yes there are MANY idiots and horrible sales people, and because of them most customers come in expecting to be mistreated. This is my job though. Please remember that. I do not come into your professional and become an instant asshole. Working 4-6 hours, with a customer who could care less about you, to make $100 on a $40k vehicle can be hard to swallow. Treat others as you wish to be treated.
All good points... thanks for showing the other side of the coin.

cool story!(istronglydisslikeutah) what would have made it better is if your FJ was fully modded! after being serviced, show it to the tool with, " so, do you really think that TT can go where mine can't?"

Finding a good car salesman at a stealership is as hard as finding a good girl in life.... Both can screw you over big time or make your life a dream....

Re: Car salesmen can be tools...

The whole dealership concept is a silly, old fashioned, unnessessary concept anyway.

Someday, you'll be able to buy what you want for a set price at WalMart.

Re: Car salesmen can be tools...

Yea but they can be great also. I have a salesman that I've dealt with for several of my work trucks. When I decided to get a Suburban the phone call went like this:

Me: Larry - I want a Suburban
Larry: Let me send you some paperwork on a few and let me know which one you like.

Within 10 minutes I have paperwork on 5 different Suburbans with a note: Just let me know which one you want.

Me: Larry - I want #3
Larry: OK - I'll have a couple of the guys drop it off at your house tomorrow.

By 10am the next day the Suburban was parked in my driveway. That afternoon I call him back.

Me: Larry - what do I need to do about payment?
Larry: The auditors come in 26 days from now so as long as you sign the form and send it back by then we'll be covered.

Can't argue with service like that. I guess that's how he was National Salesman of the year 3 years running before he retired.

I do agree though. Can't stand to haggle. Just tell me the best price you can give me and leave it at that. Don't play this cat and mouse, back and forth bullsh!t.

Re: Car salesmen can be tools...

I direct the sales and marketing efforts for our company, and I can tell you that if I ever treated our customers the way that I've been treated at most dealerships, I'd be driving a Geo Metro rather than an FJ. I understand that there are some good folks out there, and I wish they had a better way of differentiating themselves, because I hate dealing with these jokers. I know there are a few guys on this forum that are salesmen. If you ever move to Columbus, OH, let me know. I'd much rather buy from someone decent and pay a little more than deal with some of these guys.

Re: Car salesmen can be tools...

I've had good salespeople at a Ford dealership, a Toyota dealership and at an Audi dealership. They are definitely out there no question but I've also had some real turn-off's as well. They've caused me to walk away from dealerships and never come back. That's a shame. You can typically tell a good salesperson within the first 10 words out of their mouth.

The REALLY tough part is finding a good salesperson, along with a good customer service rep, and a good set of mechanics. Many places have a hard time putting together a good team. If one leg of that chair is broken, I won't go back, it's just not worth it to me for the trouble.
