Here's my $40 option: Stock OEM Roof Rack Tool Mounts

Similar concept. Simple but effective. Although for additional security (minimal as it is) I use hex-head bolt (take off with the lug nut wrench) instead of a wing nut on the front mounting point.
I liked your design. I tried to google the same hardware, but didn't find anything the price range you quoted. However it was your post that inspirated me to look for existing equipment and use them in ways other than their intended use. I first looked at UBolts, then MufflerClaims, and finally pipe claims. Finding this pipe claims was shear luck, but I instantly recognized that they would fit the bill. I like your suggestions of upgrading the hardware. I am going to make another trip to the hardware store tomorrow.

Ahhh, you should have just pm'd me...I could have sent you to two companies with those bar clamps. I'm actually buying more now. I originally looked at pipe clamps too (along with a million other various applications!), but I couldn't find anything strong enough, or secure enough...that one you found is perfect and looks good too!

Nice use of the hardware store. Be interesting to see how it holds up after wheeling and bouncing around good as that looks like some might thin metal in the wrap.

Re: $15 HiLift Jack Mount

For those still wondering if this has held up I have done the same thing for my jack, axe and shovel. I have had them on for about 3 months and several wheeling trips with several hundred miles with the tools on the roof. They are solid as a rock and hold my tools all day without a problem.
