Moved from southern California to the front range of Colorado a few months ago.
My commute is pretty much the same, about 8 miles total with 1-2 miles of surface streets/traffic lights on each end and highway cruising (65-70mph) in the middle.
In California I was getting about 16mpg very consistently. Here in Colorado I am getting about 20-21mpg very consistently. I am using 87 octane gas in both places, similar mix of city & highway driving. I haven't made any mods to the FJ (4WD auto with a Gobi Stealth rack, stock wheels/tires).
Don't know what all the variables are but I'm happy with the 28% increase in gas mileage. Gas is also cheaper here by about $0.60 or more per gallon.
So, is the only difference the thinner air in Colorado (or could it also be due to the difference in the gas formula used too)? I've been doing some high mountain driving recently, but haven't noticed any significant change in mpg here in CA.
FWIW, I never get more than 14-15 mpg, which I believe is primarily due to driving consistently at 70-85 mph on the highway, which in turn makes my 38 gallon tank capacity (with the extra 19 gallons from an MAF aux tank) all that more important. I have an OEM roof rack and skid pate (which probably contribute in part to lower gas mileage), auto tranny, BFG ATs filled to 35 psi w/normal air and/or CO2 and use only 87 octane. I also have a winch control box, PIAA fogs and Lucrum mount w/Warn M8000 winch in or on the front bumper, which increases weight by about 150 lbs, but the front profile is unchanged and shouldn't increase wind resistance much beyond stock.
In comparison, I get 35-40 mpg in my Prius (which has a hybrid engine and a more aerodynamic design) driving exactly the same way as I do in the FJ. Some people can get 50-60 mpg in a Prius (or so they say), but you have to do a lot of weird stuff (like overinflating your tires, coasting, never accerlerating rapidly and never driving faster than 55 mph to get anywhere) to get those numbers.

Well, if I drive my FJ like I'm in a hurry, I get 16-17 mpg around town. And yes, mileage starts taking a nose dive above 40 mph because of wind resistance.

I have made two highway trips so far, one windy and rainy, cruising between 70-75 mph, the other no wind steady 75, worse tank was 20.5, second one was 22 mpg, 13.5 gallons at 297 miles, my fuel light has yet to come on, vehicle is all stock 6sp, with 18000 miles. Im switching to synthetic fluids from front rear soon, as i dont know the history of the truck yet. That should help. If i can get 22mpg on a regular basis ill be happy.
i must have the fuel efficient version... i get 20.5-21.5 mpg normally; and i got over 24 mpg going to vegas at about 80-85mph one night (no a/c, nighttime only needs vent). mine is bone stock, 4x4 auto trans., steel wheels and the tires it came with; and about 19K miles. i use redline in the motor and rear-diff; and i'll be putting it in the t-case and front diff at 20K. just regular toyota dealership oil and air filters; and 36 psi in tires.
i commute 5 miles each way, all city. i'm from the south where its hot and humid, so i don't feel like i need the a/c here in the desert and just roll down the windows instead. i would ride a bike, but due to the topography, it is uphill both ways (just a large hill i go up and down both directions).
I just got back from a trip to sacramento Just under 2900 miles round trip, i only use 87 and i was using the cruise almost all of the way set at just above whatever the limit was, the ac was on 99% of the time and i averaged 22.7 mpg.
I'm still breaking mine in, just turned 700 miles, but went 180 miles on 9 gallons of gas. 20mpg during break-in makes me a happy camper. (They were all highway miles at 65mph)

Okay I've had three tanks with premium and I've gotten 330 (20.50 mpg) miles before the light turns on. My normal with regular had been 290 (18.2 mpg) miles per tank before the light turns on. My driving has remained the same, same distance every day. I guess premium does make a diffrence.
Anybody else improved their mileage just by switching to premium??
