allocations??, preferencing??, sick of waiting

I put in an order and deposit a few weeks ago. At that time, the dealer said that they only had a few orders. I ordered a black cherry MT with option pack #2. They said they would "preference it" the next day and delivery in 6 weeks should not be a problem. I put down the deposit. The next week I called them and now they are talking 90 days or more. They said I was 6th on the list, two have been already delivered, 2 have been allocated and waiting for delivery and I am second on the currently unallocated list. They told me something about they will be building it to my spec. It will be going to production in a month, it will take about a month for prodection, and a month for shipping, hence the 90 days. I thought when I ordered it, they would just be pulling it from stock that was already somewhere between production and delivery. They also seem like they are still trying to be vague about the 90 days to set me up for further delays.

So, my question is, does this story sound right or are they jacking me around? It seems like if I was 6th on the original list, and two have already been deliverd, I should be getting something before July (at best).

I admit that I don't have a good understanding of how this allocation and preferencing system works and when I ask questions, it seems like they get annoyed and provide confusing and inconsistent answers. I am wondering if I should be asking them to do something else to speed this process up? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Re: allocations??, preferencing??, sick of waiting

Belo:

First of all, welcome to the Forum.

Second, please fill out your profile - it helps enormously when answering these sorts of questions if we know where you are geographically.

Third, your dealer is probably telling you the truth. There are two ways to get one: order it to your specs, or they pick up something from the distributor, and match it to their customer prefs. Unhappily for you (and me too!) you're requesting the rarest of the configurations.

MTs are rumored to be only 10-15% of the 46,000 trucks. And Black Cherry is the least popular color, and were estimated at 10% of production. So to get a MT6 spd in Black Cherry - the intersection is...scarce.

That said, Granger posted that they had one in this configuration in the MD/PA area, and there was another posted in Washington state. As of Thursday, they were unsold.

I live in CA, and was told that my ORDERED FJ showed up in the computer on March 17th, and I was 6 weeks out from delivery. So your dealer was probably being straight.

Your only other option is to work this site, and the phone. Call every Toyo dealer you can find to track one down sooner than 12 weeks.

Hope this helped, and good luck. Post the results!

Sandi

Re: allocations??, preferencing??, sick of waiting

What area are you in? It doesn't sound like you are dealing with a bigger dealership. Meaning they won't be getting many FJ each month. And if you must have a MT and you want yours exactly the way you want it, this can be a long wait.

Here's an old thread based on the info my salesman provided me, so far, all the FJ I've seen on this board seem to agree with this old data.

Re: allocations??, preferencing??, sick of waiting

I spoke with my friend that works for Toyota(Corp Guy) last night about ordering one for me. In order to get it the way I want it I am looking at a three month wait. I am ok with that simply because I wasn't going to buy until September or so. Your other option is to somehow stumble upon one that is already preferenced the way you wanted it. Which looks to be a tall order. Personally I think you ought to get it the way you want it. What is the worst that will happen to you if you have to wait longer? Will the sky fall?

dude, call around - call every dealer in the country - you'll find it. 100%. dont wait 90 days. BS. they'll just tell you another 90 days in 90 days. And yes, the sky will fall. Go call around. whatever you do DONT stick with one dealer patiently and wait for them to build your FJ. do a search under "Jim Coleman" if you want to learn a lesson from a silly man named Air.

Re: allocations??, preferencing??, sick of waiting

Should my dealer be able to give me a date? I ordered 4 months ago, I was the first on list, their allocation came and it was the right vehicle but was silver not black. Anyway they had me looking on screen etc. showed the vehicle as in Japan. I told them I need a date and want to get the paper work out of the way in adavnce.
