They put white roofs on airstream trailers to help keep them cool. I would imagine that is why they did it to the 60's fj's. they copied the old fj's roof on the cruiser. Style and functionality.
not sure why they painted the first ones white? Not sure, but they wanted the new fj to look or resemble the vintage. But one day It struck me, that when we are on a trail in the daytime or even shade the white top might save us from being hit by a 4 wheeler or motorcycle or another 4 wheeler. just my opinion.
So that being said, it makes sense in a way to me, I like the white roof. lets it stand out from the crowd
Peace!
Wow, my FJ stays a lot cooler than my other vehicles have in the AZ summer heat, maybe that helps, never realized. Thought it might have been the blacked out windows and lack of 'window space'. Anything that helps is good for me!
It would stay a lot cooler, but I'm not sure if that's why the original was white. The original top (just the white part) was fiberglass and I imagine that the gelcoat process and handling was much easier if they stuck with just one color.

It would be great if I had a clue, but let's face it, that's just not gonna happen.
The white definately keeps the truck cooler. Back before AC became common lots of cars had white roofs, including, as stated above, the original FJ. Here in Arizona the school busses have white roofs for this reason. Since the FJ doesn't come in all white we wouldn't have bought an FJ if not for the white roof. It makes a huge difference in the desert sun.
On FJ/BJ-40/45's the roofs were all the same color because they were manufactured en masse off site. Cygnus White was chosen because it would effectively cool a vehicle that essentially was a metal box that didn't have air conditioning, and rear windows that didn't even open.
The FJC has it simply to complete the retro FJ40 look

Exactly. And the primary buyer of FJ40's during the 60's were the British in Africa.
