So my personal thoughts on why we don't see more FJ's as overland vehicles...
BTW...I think the FJ CAN be a great overland vehicle if it's for 1-2 people only. There are many amazing examples of this.
Ok, top 3 reasons the FJC isn't a perfect overland vehicle:
1) Range: Admit it...our FJ's very rarely get to 300miles on a tank, not great for extended trips to the backountry. Yes, there are options to mitigate this, but 'out of the box'
2) Capacity: For the same reason our DD/Family explorer is now a GX-470, the FJC just cant haul 3-4 people + gear for extended periods. Again, trailers, racks, etc can help - but unless you're only 1-2 people, they're not great for extended trips
3) "Still" to new. Despite how much we all love our trucks, most enthusiasts (especially hard core LC folks) don't know how awesome they really are. Land Cruisers, Tacos, and even the JK have a long history going back decades. Since the FJC is only 7 years old, it's just not seen as a long-term bet. This kind of upsets me too, if Toyota had the foresight to make & promote the FJC in the same manner Jeep did with the JK, we may not see the discontinuation next year.
Alas, that's MHO
