Re: front skid plate and mpg?

Just a WAG, but I would say under perfect conditions, the difference in MPG *might* be slightly different, but not enough to register in tenths.

You want to affect MPG? Put huge tires on the rig, lift it 3", add another 400 lbs weight to it with bumpers, winches, and whatever else you can slap on it, and then stick your foot into the peddle everytime you drive it.

I monitored my MPG for the first 2 weeks of ownership, just for comparsion, but I did not buy this vehicle for its fuel efficiency. Anyone that *did* buy it for fuel efficiency didn't do their homework or were fooling themselves!

Re: front skid plate and mpg?

Yep, fuel efficiency and 4x4 are not a good fit. Plus any vehicle that is pretty much flat plate like barn door, is not gonna get good mpg even in 2wd version.

Re: front skid plate and mpg?

It is quite likely the front skid plat will actually help the mileage. It should help smooth out the airflow going under the body. You want as smooth as flow (in general) as possible. That plate would help the airlow be less turbulent.

Re: front skid plate and mpg?

I was also thinking that one of the more streamline bumpers like the All Pro might also help millage. One can only hope.

Re: front skid plate and mpg?

Only thing (well maybe one of 2) that will help my FJ get better mileage is going downhill all the time or find a diesel for it. With gas approaching $3/gal again I am starting to hate filling it up again every 2 days.

Maybe I could make an aerodynamic bubble for it to ride in until I go off roading. I could form it out of clear lexan and make an aero nosecone for it.

Or a hydrogen conversion...

Looking at it from the side, it does add a little more roundness to the front making it a little more bullet-like. Well, as much as you can do that to the flat-nosed FJ. So, Taz may be right.
