Empty space under hood -- useful?

There seems to be a tremendous amount of blank empty space under the FJ's hood on the passenger side. Has anyone made good use of this? Geez, it looks like you could store a small suitcase there (one that holds, perhaps, my flame-retardant suit...).

Also, a sales guy told me Toyota wanted to keep that space empty so that if the FJ gets hit -- and it's most likely to get hit on that passenger side -- fewer expensive-to-replace components (like the ABS) would be smooshed. Is this true? My BS detector alerted but did not alarm.

Thanks!

Tom

Re: Empty space under hood -- useful?

If you get the TRD CAI it will eat up some of that room. Some guys have mounted a second battery. I put in a survial kit next to my CAI. So I'm out of room.

I think the crash this is BS. There are a lot of stories on the board where dealers spew misinformation about the FJ and it's design.

In any case, there are some pre-existing holes, etc in the area that make it ideal to mount stuff.

Some folks have used this area to mount a second battery. Others have mounted air compessors there.

Re: Empty space under hood -- useful?

I seriously think the FJ was designed with Diesel in mind and I believe the space will be taken up either with the V8 or diesel engine. Cause there are even some screw holes for mounting other stuff.

I am glad the saleperson didnt tell you that Toyota sells PODs, so that in an accident the FJ would fold into the POD and bounce away.

OR

the space was for mounting the sit ejector module for the front passenger incase they didnt put on their seat belt.

I dont like sales BS.

First mod I did: Engine Compartment Toolbox

I think I'm gonna have to adjust it a little when I get my CAI.
