I have a black MT FJ cruiser coming in in 3 weeks. Price is MSRP.
I also have an opportunity to buy a beautiful FJ62 that has been extremely well taken care of.
What do you guys think?
Hey Citadel. I have a very good condition fj62 that I am using as my daily driver for the moment (previously was just a toy). I have not driven the FJ Cruiser yet and am planning on getting one to replace the 62 as my daily driver. I love the 62, but my gas milage is not good and I average around 300 miles a week. My 62 does have a lift and 34" bias ply tires which contributes to an even worse gas mileage than I had in it before the lift. That being said, I think it comes down to your personal preference. For me it is saving some gas money, but more important to me is the miles that I am putting on the 62. I have 138K and has been rising quickly since making it my daily driver about 5 months ago. No doubt not a bad choice to have between the two. Jim
I was going to buy an FJ60/62 before I drove the FJ. Once I drove the new FJ I was sold. I had been looking for an FJ62 in good condition and had planned to build it up. I wanted to use it as a toy to take my boys fishing and camping. After driving the FJ I decided to buy one. Just couldn't pass up having a new car versus having to wrench on a 20 year old Cruiser. I think either way you will be happy it just depends on whether you feel like buying a used car or a new car and getting the issues associated with both. Only you can decide on what you ultimately want and need. In my case I just don't want to wrench on cars anymore.
17K for an FJ62? what are the details of this rig? mileage, year, extras, etc. Just for giggles i did a retail value on one at nada.com and came up with $6,700 for an 90 in excellent condition with 100K. It had better be coming with a lot of aftermarket add-ons for them to reasonably want 17 grand for it.
The FJ Cruiser is going to ride and handle better on road than the 62 due to the IFS of the FJC. the 62 is going to be better if you intend to use it off road, in the long run at least, because of its sturdier solid front axle and the plethora of aftermarket parts available for these trucks. there is more room in the 62, because its bigger, but this also makes it less suitable for tight twisty trails than the FJC. the 62 had 4 full doors, which could be more conveninet for carting around kids and full size adults. you mentioned the FJC you ordered has a stick, so i assume that is your preference. The 62 can be had only with an automatic transmission, which is part-time 4wd. this can be an advantage or disatvantage, it really depends on your preference.
if you intend to do work on your truck yourself the 62 is going to be much easier to work on as there are a lot less electroncs, most have PW, PL, and all have EFI. expect poor fuel economy in a 62 as well, in the mid teens is considered good on these.

That is a tough decision. I have been facing nearly the same dilemna (restore/upgrade our FJ62, or jump into a new FJC). For a few reasons, I am going ahead with the FJ62.
That price for the FJ62 is pretty high. A few of the Land Cruiser dealers sell them that high (they are clean and all the outstanding maintenance is done), but that price seems too much. Can you spare some details?

FJ62 is $17K
Citadel, I too have a black FJC coming this week. I'll be out of town -damn, but I'll pick it up on Friday.
You'll see my 89 FJ62 on the beach and in the dealer lot next to a couple of FJC's. I love my 62 and I have it completely restored, but something about the FJC made me buy one. I've had my 62 for about 6 years and I'll probably hang onto it for a while until I get a new project. I'm trying to get a 76 FJ45 deisel pickup.
I agree with some other guys that 17k is a bit high. If I sell, I'm thinking in the 12k ballpark, and I've done everything to mine.

You should surf over to ih8mud.com and post some questions there. Its a more objective cruiser community (having said that, they do have a bit of an anti-FJ bias, but at least in their case they come by it honestly).
Well, I am sure you can find nice FJ62 for under $10k, but the milage for those is 14MPG on a good day. Wait a couple years and get an FJ Cruiser for under $20k.
