I know this is a biased crowd, of course. But do y'all think it would be fiscally prudent to trade my 03 v8 4Runner limited for an FJ Cruiser. It just turned 3 yrs, 3 months just off full warranty, 35K miles only. It has leather, power, rear window, sliding glass moon roof, 235 hp, 320 ft lbs torque, full time 4 wheel drive, power instant up and down driver passenger and rear windows, homelink, maplights, jbl w/ sub, all five windows roll down completely. These are the things that make me hesitate.
Or the cruiser??
You guys know what its got and doesn't. What I think I'd miss would be roll down windows and visibility. On hot days I could lower all windows and open roof and its practically a convertable/lift off top. Mucho air flow!! Course its not that hot here on California Central Coast.
Homelink-handy-opens garage but I could live without it.
full time 4 wheel drive-good all time traction, uses bit more gasoline, good in rain, etc.
V8-torque nice, but maybe little better mpg's with FJC's 6 w/ 2 wd. 6 even has 4 more hp, but 42 less torque.
Leather vs water resistant fabric?
Now that 4R is off warranty was getting ready to do some mods. Lift and new tires would probably be $2K+/-
fjc would prob just need a/t tires, then rails not too much $$.
FJC coolness factor!!
FJC shorter which I kind of like. 4Runner seems little long sometimes when manuevering, but then again it has longer cargo space-trade off sort of.
FJC "seems" wider inside and outside. Book says 4R wider but sure doesn't look like it.
FJC heavier overbuilt vehicle. more durable, solid, etc. Simpler no frills all your money goes to truck, not gadgets-gotta like that.
Anything else??
When I started listing 4R stuff felt like I shouldn't do it, then when I listed FJ stuff it felt like I should. HMMMMMMMMMMM. What to do? What to do?
Any well reasoned fact based logical arguments would be appreciated. Off the wall theories ok, too.
I am not a fan of the new generation 4runners, but I do have a 3rd generation 4runner and it is a near perfect design for my varied needs. Go sit in the new FJ before you decide. It is a nice truck, BUT rear visibility is almost non-existent, cargo does not fold flat like the 4R and the rear window does not go down. Furthermore the swing out rear door stinks. I was could not even keep the rear door open at the dealer because it was on a slight incline. I also do not know why the interior room is so small in the back. The walls are in the back look like they are about 8" thick.

I guess you couldn't figure out how to lock it in an open position. In fact there are directions on the door arm telling you how to, if you bothered to look at it.
rdr,
It is your call. Test drive it and decide what YOU want to do rather than get opinions from complete strangers. Afterall, it is your money. Good luck.
With a swing out door one cannot always have room to open the door all the way, as it was in my case. My point was that locking or not, the swing out door stinks.

I don't mind the rear door at all. I think it may be easier than opening overhead in a lot of situations. The overhead you must open, stand back, weight for hydrolic pressure to allow it to reach full height and then throw something in back. With the side opener, you could just open a foot, toss in gym bag, groceries, which are the two things I put in and take out the most and off you go. Quicker and easier I would think. I park pulling in a lot more than parallel parking.
I usually stand directly behind door to open and close, which means you're also sticking out in traffic some. And couple weeks ago, I was standing to the corner and pulled it closed as someone was talking to me and I bonked myself on the head.

The FJ is a shortened Land Cruiser Prado aka in america as the 4Runner. The 4Runner has many features that the FJ currently does not have. I would not trade a Runner for an FJ. Wait a year or two and see what improvements or upgrades the FJ receives. I am waiting for an '08, hopefully they have the features I want, if not I'll be in the market for a used LX 470 or Land Cruiser.

I guess you just half to be smarter than what you are working with huh ?

I'm not looking for huge changes, but does anyone think the backseat access will change any? I don't think it would call for huge overhauls in the manufacturing process to make the front seats swing forward to allow easier access to the back. Just something that's bugging me right now and holding me back...at least for now...

I think the Prada equivalent in the states is the Lexus GX series.
