Can aftermarket seats be installed in the FJ?

Since most FJs have curtain and side airbags, could you install Recaro seats or other aftermarket seats?

I assume that as long as you were ok with removing the side airbags, that this is possible, but I don't know if there are sensors in the seats which would cause problems or other issues that I may have missed. I see this a lot on older FJ40s.

In a few years, I would really like to change the seats to have more side bolstering. Any comments on the issues would be helpful.

Re: Can aftermarket seats be installed in the FJ?

i've seen fjs with them but i'm not sure how it affects the airbags. i was planning on getting some bucket seats but i couldn't find prefabricated mounts.

Re: Can aftermarket seats be installed in the FJ?

I can think of 3 Fj with racing seats off hand
1. Donahoe Racing Class 3 Fj (my favorite Fj ever, just SICK)
2. Millen Racing class 7s Fj
3. Team Necessary class 7s Fj

Millen and Necessary were on TV the show was called "Two Roads to Baja" great show recomend you watch it if you haven't.
Donahoe has some pictures of theres on here some were you can also see the buildup of the truck here The guys from Donahoe are on here some times.

You should be fine with pulling the stock seats you just might get a light or two on the dash.

Thanks for the great info! It is good to know that it is possible. There are some really nice aftermarket seats available. While the side airbags in the seats would not be functional, I wonder if the curtain airbags (on the ceiling) would still work?

Re: Can aftermarket seats be installed in the FJ?

Those are purpose built race trucks so I am sure the complete air bag systems were removed. (Dont want to land hard and have an airbag in the face in a Baja 500!) If you have the side air bags in the seats then you are removing a system the truck looks for each time it start up. I am sure it will run but it probably will through a code. (warning light)

I purposely got a truck w/o the extra airbags with this in mind; however the passenger seat has its 4 sensors under it. The passenger sensors operate the passenger side airbag. As I am sure you have noticed with your truck if no one is in the seat the pass. Air bag is not active. (Takes 60 lbs to turn it on) I am work on this right now since I would like to keep the auto airbag set up running. Brackets are not an issue for custom seats, its just a matter of making the truck think it still has the OE seats in it. (passenger side anyway)
