dealer sent me different oil filters... okay to use them?

the fj filter that is in my truck is: 90915-20004 (made in japan -- about 4.5 inches tall). the dealer said that the part number on the filter in the truck changed to: 90915-YZZD3

i ordered 10 from a dealer in WA as the price was really good ($3.90)... they sent: 90915-YZZD1 (made in thailand -- about 3.5 inches tall).

i called them and they said that it would be okay to use them, but that the filter just wouldn't "filter" as much oil.

can anyone give me feedback on this. i'm sure the filter will screw on, and i do my oil change every 5,000 miles, but can do it at 3,000 if the lower volume will decrease the life expectancy of the filter.

i just don't want the engine to overheat or pressure to be excessive and do any damage and then my local dealer, if a warranty issue arrises, to deny my claim as i'm using a different filter. i know that "fram" filters are smaller than factory, so i think it will be okay.

thanks!

Re: dealer sent me different oil filters... okay to use them?

I have had the same problem. The original was made in japan and the dealer OEM was made in thailand. There isn't going to be any harm to engine. Yes, it will filter less and no the pressure isn't going to increase. Even if it did, 99% of engines have an oil pressure regulating valve. Up here in Canada the same filter is 7.25 CDN dollars. Canucks paying the top dollar again.

The 90915-20004 is not available here in the US anymore sadly to say, as it is indeed a SUPERIOR filter to the YZZD3. There is much posted about this, with one link below.

Re: dealer sent me different oil filters... okay to use them?

I had the same questions when I did the first oil change. Was told that they sold me the current filter that replaced the one that came on the FJ new.

seems to work.

Re: dealer sent me different oil filters... okay to use them?

Either will be fine.

90915-20004 = Japanese
90915-YZZD3 = US source, made in Thailand. This is the number we use in our shop.

The country of origin does not change the quality of the filter.
Toyota has manufacturing guidlines that all manufactures must meet. So if it comes from Thailand or Japan its still made the same.

The Japanese filter may be different in size and different in cost but basically it does the same thing as the other.

The main thing is to change your oil at or earlier than the recommended interval and use a quality motor oil.

Hope this has helped.

Re: dealer sent me different oil filters... okay to use them?

i've got one on there now... screwed in fine, but yes, it was a little shorter. nothing burning or smoking...

oh, and i installed the Fumoto Engine Oil Drain Valve, too...

there is no chance of it coming off or opening, it is too small and out of the way! besides, it's under the removable panel where the oil pan is, anyway...

i changed the oil and filter at 1,300 to remove the new engine debris, and will do it again at 2,500 and then just every 5,000... will post how the draining goes when i do it.
