Xenon Headlights

For those who have an interest... Amazon sells a very inexpensive hi/low HID (xenon) upgrade kit that I put on my FJ for only $279. Doubles the light output and at 8000K, has a nice bright blue light like you would see only on high end machines. Box says only legal for off road but I've been running mine for 2 months and have yet for anybody to flash at me when I'm on low beam so no problem. Reasonably easy install and an enormous visability improvement. So cheap I bought an extra for future parts but no problems so far. The site wouldn't let me post the URL but you can go to Amazon and look up:

Re: Xenon Headlights

I don't have a FJ and have these questions:

Are your highbeams a seperate light from the lowbeam?

The kit you are using is it a hi/low kit or just HIDs with the loss of highbeams?

Re: Xenon Headlights

Are these, or other HID, compatible with the daytime running lights? I like the DRL here in the urban environment - lotta crazy drivers out there. But I really like the reduced light output DRL setting. I think it's like 50% of normal light for the DRL?

Anyway, just curious. Never had HID. Is it dimmable like regular halogen, or is the ballast sensitive to that like flourescent is?

Re: Xenon Headlights

According to another website: "The Hi/Low kits feature DUAL filament HID bulbs for a true 'hi/low' function: hi beam on, low beam off and vice versa."

And MSRP on that system is over $400.

Re: Xenon Headlights

You will not have working DRL's with any of these "conversion kits". In fact, if you don't specifically disable the DRL's, the ballasts on the HID kit will "flutter" due to the reduced voltage supplied through the DRL resistor - leading to a very short life (for the ballasts).

Huh, interesting. I'll have to figure out Plan B.

Well how do OEM HID cars do it - is their DRL just regular low beams?

Thanks for the info.

Re: Xenon Headlights

I've seen two different approaches on cars with factory HID & DRL's; some just use the full power HID low beam as the DRL, others have an additional incandescent lamp inside the headlamp housing for use as the DRL.

Another intersting obsevation, in the US, DOT compliant HID lighting is for low beams only, the high beams are always incandescent bulbs to be able to provide "instant-on" response.

There are HID kits available that use this two-bulb approach, but I've yet to see one available for an H4 retrofit that is DOT approved.
