Question Waxing your New FJ

Hi All

I am picking up my new FJ Cruiser this week. I know that best thing you can do for a new car is apply a good wax. I don't have a favorite wax, and not sure what would be best for a brand new car. So I thought I would offer this up to the board for discussion.

What is your favorite new car wax and why?

My neighbor, who makes his living detailing and repair paint for cars, claims that you shouldn't wax a new car. He recomended http://www.meguiars.com/?pro-pure-po...al-Hand-Polish

What's the difference?

I don't know this guys ability well enough to know if I should trust him. Thoughts?

Re: Waxing your New FJ

I though Polish was just used to restore that show room shine. I want something that will help protect that shine??

I have read a number of sites that recommends cleaning and waxing once you get your new car home. New cars are painted before assembly and have had time for the paint to totally cure. If you have had a new paint job, you should wait 3-4 weeks before applying any type of paint protection. However none of the sites recommend what was best wax for a new car.

Give the paint six months to season.

I used to be a fan of AstroShield, sold by IPDUSA.com but I am finding that plain old Turtle Wax works better than almost any other wax, including Meguiars, and is only $4 a can at the supermarket....just my opinion.....

Modern paint is cured before it leaves now adays with UV lighting they can fully cure paint finish in hours instead of weeks or months... now old school Laquer... thats an entirely differant animal.. As for wax Vs. Polish... in the FL heat wax has melted off the surface in a car within days if not hours... its wax it melts.. how hot is the surface of your car in the sun? with Zaino polish there is nothing to melt off.. and I find cleaning is almost nothing because the surface is smoother and dirt simply slides off with a hose.. just my .02

I am curious, since I do live in Florida year-round. How does the polish hold up to protect the paint in relation to a good wax?

Re: Waxing your New FJ

What about areas what are a little cooler. I live in the NorthWest were it rains 3 seasons a year, and the summer might only have 2-3 days above 100. Do people still perfer to use a Polish over a Wax?

What??? I can't believe people would wax or polish their own truck when, for $200, a dealer can "seal" your paint. I keed, I keed.

Re: Waxing your New FJ

Even though I did not pay for it, my FJ has the ToyoGuard paint sealant on it. Does this factor into when I should first wax or polish and if so, does it make a difference which method I should use? Also, the dealer gave me a bottle of ToyoGuard paint "Sealant Cleaner". Should I ever use it or just throw it out? It appears to be like a cleaner that will strip away surface elements and also a wax that is supposed to protect my "sealed" paint surface.
