Knowing what you know now, how would you buy your 'Cruiser, e.g. base model and buy aftermarket wheels, stereo, etc? Is it possible to get a base model, e.g. 6-speed, steel wheels, etc. with the most desirable 4x4 system - lockers/A-trac? Has anyone tried to buy a 'Cruiser with no wheels, e.g. get credit for the wheel/tire combo and bring wheels/tires to the dealer to pick up? I'd think they'd be open to that - they could throw the wheels (alloys) on another one (with steel wheels) and upcharge for it.
Anyway, I am going back and forth between a base model and the other end of the spectrum. I don't intend on doing any hardcore wheeling (know it's capable, but have a built CJ for trail duty). It will be a daily driver and occassional light wheeling / camping rig.
If you want to keep the cost down, do what I (and many others) have done.
Just buy a base unit 4x4 with factory-installed locking differential. (You'll likely end up with the Convenience Package whether you want it or not, but it's got most of the creature comforts you'll want anyway.)
Then, just add exactly what you want after the fact. In fact, the aftermarket purchase of most goodies are a lot less expensive than having them included in an Upgrade Package.
However, if the Upgrade Packages do have exactly what you want anyway, it might be easier to have it all thrown in at the time of purchase if you can swing a good deal.
Okay, that makes sense. I may just see how the deals go - if the dealers are loaded up with the ones with more options, they'll deal more on them...
Regarding the tires... If my math is right, the stock tires are 32.2". So, it'd seem a 1.5" (rear) and 2.5" (front) lift would make 33s fit about perfectly - and have a negligable impact on the performance. So, is it possible to "get credit" for the new tires that the FJC come with and "upgrade" to a different and larger tire - before I ever leave the dealer's lot? Short of just bringing the new tires and eating the cost of the factory and aftermarket tires.
As many cars/trucks as I've had, I've never made any changes to one as soon as I got it. I'm already thinking about mods to the FJC... and I'm only 80% I'm going to buy one. This thing is going to fun!
Thanks!
Side note... the more I look at the FJC, the more I think 33s would work/look better with no lift - maybe a little up front, but not much...

I talked to the dealer today - seemed like the idea of crediting the wheels/tires wasn't going to fly. At a minimum, I'd like to get them to switch the wheels/tires with one with "better" tires. A couple of the FJCs had Pirelli Scorpions - while hardly a mud terrain, they're much more aggressive than the others - the ones most are wearing.
What's up with the BFG ATs? Are/were they an option?
Here's a Thread with a pricing Spreadsheet you might find helpful: Future FJ Cruiser Buyers Only
You can also build an FJC the way you want it at Toyota's website, then fire off Requests For Quotes for that vehicle to as many Dealers as you want to.

get one with the stock tires. then you won't feel so bad replacing them before they wear out. i got the TuRD wheel/BFG tire package and regret it a bit (though i still dig the TRD wheels, and the BFG's are great, but i will most likely want to go bigger long before they wear out).
