as for white top...I dont know who first decided or why but after driving an Land Cruiser in Kuwait in 1994-1995....the white top definitely helps with heat when you dont have air conditioner. Same reason school buses and other passenger vehicles had white roofs back in the day before A/C....

Why Too compete with Chrysler's other product the PT Cruiser of corse.

Because the "Land Cruiser" already exists as a completely different model within the Toyota product line.

But, I agree. The FJ Cruiser should've been the modern day Land Cruiser.
