I took my FJ into EZ Lube for an oil change. Yes, I know, cardinal sin. I was just too lazy and didn't want to do it myself today. Anyway, the change was done, but when I looked later this evening, I noticed that there was a bit of oil in that little cup type fixture surrounding the oil filter. Now, my issue is this - was that there because of a bit overflow? Or, as I believe, is it because they didn't use the correct filter (I read on another post about a specific gasket around the bottom of the filter. And, if I remember right, I saw it and noticed it outright the other day)?
So, which do you think it is? The thing that caught my attention was that the Maint Req'd light kept blinking again the second time I started the FJ up after the oil change. it didn't happen the when I left the business. The light blinking means that the vehicle needs an oil change according to the owner's manual so I'm really bothered by this! I have to go back in the morning and figure out what the hell. First thing I'm going to do in the morning though is wipe away the oil in the cup/pan and see what happens by the time I get into work. That will obviously let me know what the deal is.
I knew I should've just done the damn thing myself!!! This blows.
Also, which filter is ABSOLUTELY correct for our trucks? I don't want to get some generic POS when I fix this thing. Thanks!
It was there when the filter was removed. Most likely not a big deal it will just burn off. Might smell too for a little while. But really no big deal. If it bothers you clean it up with a rag.

Also your oil change reminder can be reset. They do not do that kind of stuff at Jiffy lube. You do it by holing in the trip reset shaft for a few seconds. (I think, Don't remember) You can read up on this in the owners manual. I did. Good Luck

It could be that they just didn't drain it. The cup thingy your talking about has a realease on it. Im sure you know this. So, maybe the jiffy guys didn't release all the oil out.
I was short on time and stopped at Jiffy Lube - I knew I should have left when the manager had never seen one of these FJ Cruisers (RUN). After they should have been done I asked why it was taking so long - They were busy trying to take of the rock guard on the bottom to get to the oil filter. Needless to say they could find it there but the kept try anyway.
I pointed to the oil filter right on top. It would have bit them...
10 minutes later they apologized and said they were trying to take the rock guard off again to get to the drain plug because it "stuck". This is where I told them to put it all back together so I could leave.
They kept trying to tell me they needed batter access to the drain plug and that there was a special tool (probably a metric socket) they prevented them from actually getting the rock guard off, it was "attached to the frame with a special connnector"
Off to the local dealer I went 2 days later to make sure nothing was to damaged and fresh oil.
I never had them do anything other then oil previously and will not be back there again. It is all about the particular location and the knowledge they have - I got a bad combination.
I'll check that in the morning. Thanks for the advice. And no, I'm not going back to that place anymore. Just not confident in them. I'll just go to the dealer this weekend and be done with it all.
I had my 5K service done at the dealer this morning...in and out in an hour and it's nice having it done by somebody who keeps replacement FJs on hand is they really F something up and need to give me a new one
OK ... spillage in the filter cup is from the filter change as gravity causes the oil to set on the lowest point in the cup. Take a brawny paper towel ball it up shove it in the right side of the filter and in a minute it will absorb the excess oil. If you are still worried do a quick check on the filter cup a day or two later.
You guys should do your oil changes yourself then to let some "dipstick" at a "fast" lube shop touch your ride. I could tell you a million horror stories as my uncle managed one for 10 years. Oil changes are easy I have my 14 year old nephew do mine under my supervison of course. Invest in a small $10 tool kit, $5 oil drain bucket, $35 floor ramps and do it yourself. I use a K&N 1002 filter and Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5w30 = $30 a change with about 20 minutes labor.

The oil in your filter surround is probably residual oil from when the slobs there at EZ lube removed the filter. After installing the new one, they SHOULD have cleaned the area up, to avoid confusion and to be able to check for leaks, as is standard procedure after a filter change. Wipe the oil away from the filter area, and check that area after running the engine for a little while. No more oil ??? - you're good to go, just sloppy workmanship at EZ Lube. More oil appearing ??? - Either it was improperly installed (hard to beleive, but possible) or they used the wrong filter. Call 'em and scream.
Your maintenance light is triggered by mileage intervals, so it is probably coincidence that it is blinking now. It blinks at about 4500 miles since the previous change, and becomes a solid warning light after 5000 miles or so. Hold down the odometer button, turn the ignition to the "on" position (but don't start the car), and wait until the little bars in the odometer readout disappear one by one - wha la !!! Your maintenance light has now been cleared for another 5000 miles...
