trailer hitches

I am looking to buy a hitch for the FJ and i'm not sure which one i should buy. Anyone have any experiance with the "hidden hitch" or the "valley"? i like the look of the tubular bars used on the valley but would like to see a pic of the hidden hitch on an fj also.

I was planning on just buying the wiring from the dealership cause it looks like it would just plug in right behind the drivers side rear wheel and got from there to the hitch. Am i correct in assuming this?

Thanks!

Re: trailer hitches

I just installed a hidden hitch on mine and all looks good so far. The wiring, whether you get it from Toyota or aftermarket, requires a converter. The Toyota converter must be installed under the drivers kick panel and a relay needs to be installed under the hood. The aftermarket wiring has a little more wiring and you have to run a positive lead to the battery. Here's the install instructions for both.

Re: trailer hitches

The largest will be a 6x10 enclosed trailer with no more than 3 sportbikes. smallest will be an open trailer with 4 dirtbikes.

Re: trailer hitches

I just did that. I bought the factory hitch and harness package from Toy. I paid a little more than the aftermarket but the look is much cleaner and sits tucked up and clear for obstruction. The aftermarket hitches sit lower in the rear end (taking away from your descent angle for off roading. Install was easy after I talked to the service tech and he informed me where the little gray box mounts and plugs under the dash and the relay and 2 fuses plug in under the hood in the relay box. Harness pluggs right in under the bumper. Unfortunately, the relay/fuse part came with no directions which chapped my hyde but whatcha gonna do? Now you know.

A couple of reasons I went aftermarket:
  • Little cheaper.
  • This was a temporary fix for towing.
  • The FJ is the wife's DD and will probably never go off-road.
  • Installing the OEM hitch would mean I would have to find another location for the reverse camera.

I do have to say that I do like the look of the OEM better for a "cleaner" look but this will serve my purposes for now.

Was there and cutting to do to make it fit in the bumber or anything like that? i read the toyota wiring instructions and that seems pretty simple for my skill level so i think if i don't have to cut on any body parts or anything i might go the route.

thanks.

No, doesn't look like it. Here's the Toyota instructions for installing. I'm looking at the same setup and found the pdf on trdsource.com
