After our family having the FJ for 4 years, and the 4runner for about 2, I believe I have a pretty good idea about the differences... The FJ is mine, and the 4runner is my sisters. I know that different models could change lots of
this review...
The 4runner is a 2012 limited, and the FJ is somewhat modified, so not perfect for a comparison. We did have the FJ stock before I got it. However, most of this should still help, and I will try to be as fair as posable.
4runner pros:
Sliding back window
Bigger back seats
Bigger cargo area
Less wind noise
Heated mirrors
Navigation
Heated wiper blades
Heated seats
Sunroof
FJ pros:
More head room
Front seats are bigger
Higher stock bumpers
Rear locker
Better offroad
Much better roofrack
Feels like a tank
Now my thoughts...
The FJ feels like a tank the moment you get inside, big knobs levers and tough looking stuff meet the eye. The 4runner has leather and small buttons, feels more refined. The ride follows the same theme, the FJ feels like you can drive over anything, while the 4runner feels like you can drive over most things. Both feel solid, and the doors all close with a thud.
The FJ, even stock was better
Offroad and in the snow. But the 4runner is no soft roader...
I drive an FJ because I like hopping curbs, plowing through snow drifts, and going through ditches. I could care less about heated seats.
One feature on the 4runner that is nice for places that get snow, is the full time 4wd. It can save your butt, and works really well. It does ruin most drifting chances... The headroom in the 4runner is not very good. I find I have to put the seat down a lot to be comfortable. In the FJ, there is tons of room with the seat fully up.
In the end, both are safe, reliable, offroadable, snow worthy vehicles.
This my not have been a very good review, but if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.
Cheers,
Matt
