FJ locked me out of the car.

Stopped for gas on the Interstate this morning. Since the FJ started beeping when I opened the door, I removed the key from the ignition and set it in the center console. Sometime while I was pumping gas, the FJ decided to lock the doors.

Fortunately, I was only about 10 miles (and not 500) from home. Another guy getting gas was kind enough to drive me back to the apartment for the spare FJ key and then drive me back to the gas station. I also lucked out that the apartment manager was there with a spare house key.

I can't find this auto-locking "feature" described in the owner's manual. It does warn against leaving the key in the ignition when small children are in the car, but if you remove the key and set it on the console, you'll lock the kids in the car. Can this auto-locking "feature" be disabled?

Re: FJ locked me out of the car.

When I went for a test drive, the test vehicle was set up with the VIP alarm. It would automaticly lock the doors after 30 sec. When I asked the sales person about it, he said that the VIP was adjusted to be very sensitive to avoid forgetting to lock the doors after someone has taken it for a test drive. I'm not sure how to adjust this feature of the VIP, but you may want to enquire about it with the dealership.

Re: FJ locked me out of the car.

The dealership can re-configure the VIP system not to auto-lock the doors

Re: FJ locked me out of the car.

I always get a flat metal copy of my key (no black rubber / plastic key ring end), and put in my wallet for just those types of occasions. Saved me twice in last 5 years since I started carrying one.

Re: FJ locked me out of the car.

I don't have VIP (I have a Glock) but mine will self-lock too. While I was working on the toolbox under the hood it would self-lock after about 3-5 minutes...did this about 10 times so it wasn't a fluke. Do I have a ghost?

I don't have VIP either (I have a Detonics), but I will talk to the dealer.

I haven't noticed this... but I will look out for it in the future -- thanks for the heads up.

Re: FJ locked me out of the car.

For the VIP system, the steps to change from passive to active arming is outlined in the instructions in the glove box.

YMMV

Re: FJ locked me out of the car.

Ok, found it in the manual...really should sit down and read that thing.

Anyway, if you unlock the doors with the remote wireless key fob you have 60 seconds to open a door or it automatically locks the doors.
