When working with aluminum, is it possible to receive a product that has a 1/8th inch variance? Is that acceptable? How does aluminum arrive? Blocks? I don't know how you receive and work with aluminum, but I received a product recently that's out of spec by 1/8 of an inch. The vendor told me when they received the raw material, sometimes there's a variance. The item was CNC machined and I thought it's suppose to be very precise. 1/8th of an inch sounds ridiculous. Am I wrong?
Thanks.
Raw stock comes in a block or a sheet usually with a variance of +/-.005 of in inch, some of the cheaper venders will be +/-.010 of a inch (for a ref a piece of paper or a human hair is .003 of a inch thick and 1/8 coverts into .125). A CNC machine can be as accurate as +/-.0002( 2 ten thousands of an inch).
It sounds like the vendor screwed up on you product or it came from china where their quailty sucks and they use the metric system, but to be an 1/8 off is huge. They might of been casted which can have a lot of variance in thickness. I don't think it will matter for bead locs, but if you payed for 5/8 you should get 5/8 thick.
Briman, it's 1/8th inch thinner then it should be. Not sure if they entered the wrong numbers or just trying to save some money.
so call them, tell them that you wanted 5/8" and its only a 1/2". its not that big of a deal. something isnt wrong with the machining on it because it sounds perfect, just not the right dimensions. thats their mistake. quit crying about it and call whoever did it and explain it. they will understand. its just the wrong size.
you paid for and ordered a 5/8" ring....strike 2 for these guys so far..
its a mistake, it happens all the time. i worked at a machine/welding shop for a while, actually starting there again soon, but anyway it happens a lot. just explain it to them.

Briman, I did call them. They told me that 1/8 inch is an acceptable variance. I didn't believe them but I'm no expert so I came to you guys. They told me that I should just accept it. If I don't want it I can return it for a full refund, but there's a 25% restocking fee. It'll come out close to $400 for that 25%

that is much more clear. call back and ask them if 1/8" tolerance is ok when they machine engines? then explain to them that you will return these when the new 5/8" rings are delivered.

Metric system for machining is more accurate.
