I don't have the problem YET (9/06 build) but, if I do later, in layman's terms, exactly what's involved in "fixing" it? From what you've mentioned, it sounds like complete removal of the engine and all the wiring and equipment in the affected area and then cutting out the old panels and welding in the new panels.
Is that it? If so, how long would it take to do that work and, if you DON'T have the problem yet, how do you get a "field engineer" to come and look at your car? ie.,will they send a "field engineer" just because you ask for one? Please advise. Thanks!
The repairs being performed currently involve replacing the inner fenderwells and core support. The engine stays, but all the electrical on the fenderwells is moved to allow for the repair, along with front bumper , radiator, A/C condenser, etc which are also removed.
I suggest people wait before allowing Toyota to perform these repairs, as it seems this repair DOES NOT cure the problem.
Field engineers usually have scheduled rounds at their area dealerships, so check with your dealer to find out when that rep is at their location.

Wow! I just checked this post today. I went out and checked my 07 and sure enough both sides are cracked. I live in the Mississippi Delta and there are no rocks to climb. I do go "mudding" but have never had the body under any severe stresses of any kind.

Sorry to hear about your FJC, but I'm glad you were able to find the problem - now you will be aware of the situation, and can see about a repair or resolution for the problem. Please take your vehicle to your dealer and have the cracks documented, and then file a formal complaint with the NHTSA.
And please let any other FJC owners in your area know about this serious issue...TIA

WOW! Just went out to the garage and checked. Driver side ok. Passenger side, slightly bulging with some malformations behind and in front of the area shown to be cracking with other owners.
The kicker: Zero trail use. All highway, 22K miles. Built 11/06, stock.
Can we get some pics posted of these various conditions? bulges, cracks and tears? obviously some are more noticeable. i am nearing the end of my warranty term and have nothing obvious but want to make sure there is nothing i am not noticing. thanks

Pics have already been posted earlier in this thread and in several other related threads on this topic. Take a couple of minutes to search for them - it's worth your time to make sure you con't lose out on an coverage issue...

Today, I inspected a late model 07 FJC, with the newer inner panels, that has bulging starting after about 16,000 miles...so even if you have a newer model FJC, please keep alert to the symptoms, as it seems the new inner fender aprons are not exempt from this problem...

This is a serious problem, thanks for the post, I will def. pass this on to everybody I know, I wonder if Toyota has been made aware of this? If so it must of been kept under wraps. Good post!

Toyota is aware of this problem, but they are not publicizing it at all. Many (I'd say most) dealers are still unaware of this issue, as are most FJC owners.
As it involves the structure of a safety zone, i'd hope Toyota would want to make sure vehicle owners and dealers know about the possible symptoms and how to spot them, but based on my conversations Toyota Customer Service still feels these are isolated incidents. It will be up to all FJC owners to make others aware of this potentially serious situation, and keep pressure on Toyota to do the right thing:
All FJC owners can help by doing the following:
1) Check your vehicle for symptoms regularly
2) If symptoms exist, take to dealer for documentation / warranty protection
3) File a complaint with Toyota Corporate offices
4) File a complaint with the NHTSA
